An Open Letter to His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, Executive Governor of Kano State.
By Bala Salihu Dawakin ym
Your Excellency,
I write to you with deep respect and a strong sense of responsibility, not only as a committed member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but also as someone who has actively participated in the political landscape of Kano State over the years.
I have contested for various positions, from Chairman of Dawakin Kudu Local Government to the House of Representatives. In all these efforts, I have always placed the collective interest above personal ambition, stepping aside when necessary for the greater good.
As the leader of a prominent political movement in Kano State, the NEW APC AMBASSADORS, which spans all 44 Local Government Areas—from state level to wards and polling units—we remain deeply engaged with grassroots mobilization. Our structure allows us to hold regular meetings and receive daily reports from our representatives across the state.
My experience also includes serving as Press Secretary in the office of the Deputy Governor and as Special Adviser on Media Affairs in the Governor’s Office for eight years. Currently, I serve as Zonal Coordinator (North-West) of the BAT Movement.
Your Excellency, I urge you to remain vigilant and proactive. If decisive action is not taken, the political challenges ahead—particularly the 2027 elections—may prove overwhelming. I previously offered similar counsel to Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, which unfortunately was not heeded, leading to avoidable political setbacks. Likewise, during the candidacy of Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, I shared insights that were dismissed, with similar consequences.
Despite my position outside your immediate circle, and although I have not physically visited the Government House, I continue to closely observe and analyze your administration.
0 My intention remains clear: to speak the truth without fear, favor, or hesitation.
Your Excellency, I bring these concerns forward not out of criticism, but out of genuine regard for your success—especially considering your association with our political family. The choice before you is simple: accept these observations and take corrective measures, or disregard them at great risk. I am confident that Almighty Allah is my witness that I speak only the truth.
It is important to note that a significant number of your appointees—indeed, a large majority—are not contributing positively to your administration. Instead, their actions are alienating the public and undermining your government’s credibility. Poor public relations, lack of grassroots engagement, and ineffective leadership at various levels are pushing supporters away rather than drawing them closer.
I must also draw your attention to the situation at the Local Government level. If the current leadership structure remains unchanged going into the next election cycle, it could result in serious political consequences. A considerable proportion of these officials do not genuinely support your leadership.
Your Excellency, based on my experience working with political organizations and my continuous engagement with the people, I have access to firsthand information regarding the challenges within your administration. These insights come not only from the public but also from individuals within your government.
On the matter of leadership choices, particularly regarding the position of Deputy Governor, I must strongly advise that any decision that overlooks Murtala Sule Garo could pose significant risks to your administration and even affect broader political outcomes, including support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Kano State.
From the onset of your administration, it has been evident that there are structural and loyalty issues among some of your appointees. While there are indeed a few dedicated and sincere individuals working tirelessly for your success, many others lack commitment, integrity, and genuine support for your leadership.
Even during my time in opposition before your alignment with the APC, our internal assessments indicated instability within your administration.
Numerous political groups across the 44 Local Government Areas are ready to play a crucial role in securing your re-election—provided they are properly engaged and supported.
There are also individuals within your administration whom I have neither met nor seen, yet reports suggest they are contributing significantly behind the scenes. Their efforts are noted and appreciated, even if they remain largely unrecognized.
Your Excellency, if electoral success is your goal, then a thorough reassessment of all 44 Local Government Areas is essential.
Entering the next election cycle without addressing existing issues at this level could prove detrimental.
Furthermore, there is a growing concern regarding the relationship between your administration and the general public. Complaints about the conduct and accessibility of Local Government leaders and government officials are widespread. This disconnect must be urgently addressed.
In conclusion, Your Excellency, time is still on your side. There is ample opportunity to recalibrate your administration by embracing capable, loya
. and people-oriented individuals, while also enforcing discipline where necessary.
There are additional critical matters I have not included in this letter due to their sensitive nature. Should the opportunity arise for a personal meeting, I would be willing to discuss them in detail.
I remain deeply concerned and sincerely hopeful for your success. The situation on the ground is complex, and urgent attention is required.
Respectfully,
Hon. Bala Salihu
