The peaceful night in Lakwaya, a settlement under Kururawa village in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, was shattered when unidentified bandits launched a violent attack on Sunday, killing one resident and abducting another.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed the community under the cover of darkness, firing sporadically to create panic. Their gunshots echoed through the sleeping town, forcing residents to flee for safety as chaos consumed the night. When the dust settled, one man had tragically lost his life, and Alhaji Yakubu of Tsohuwa Kururawa had been abducted, plunging the community into fear and grief.
In response to the attack, the Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government, Dr. Mani Tsoho Gwarzo, led a high-powered delegation to Lakwaya to commiserate with the victims and reassure residents. In an official statement signed by Auwalu Musa Yola, the Gwarzo LGA Information Officer, Dr. Mani expressed deep sadness over what he described as a “terrible and heartbreaking incident.” He vowed that the local government would intensify security efforts and implement urgent measures to protect lives and property.
The chairman was accompanied by members of the Gwarzo Legislative Council, the Local Government Secretary and his deputy, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), DSS officials, Immigration personnel, members of the Civil Defence Corps, and other heads of security agencies. Their presence, he said, symbolized the government’s firm commitment to restoring peace in the area.
Security agencies confirmed that additional measures have been deployed, including improved surveillance and intelligence-gathering strategies aimed at preventing future attacks. They urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or activities without delay.
In an emotional account, Fati, the daughter of the kidnapped Alhaji Yakubu, narrated how the gunmen broke into their home and took her father away despite the family’s desperate pleas. Fighting back tears, she called on the authorities to intensify rescue efforts to ensure her father returns home safely.
Community leaders expressed gratitude for the emergency visit by the local government delegation, saying it boosted their morale during this difficult and frightening period.
Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf warned against politicizing security matters, emphasizing that the safety of citizens remains a collective responsibility. Special prayers have been held across the state, seeking divine protection and guidance.
Dr. Mani concluded the visit with prayers for the soul of the deceased and for the safe return of Alhaji Yakubu. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Lakwaya Ward, calling for unity and resilience in the face of adversity.
