LAGOS — The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed a fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, prompting an immediate emergency response and causing disruptions to flight operations on Sunday.

In an official statement released through its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, FAAN disclosed that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) swiftly mobilized to the scene and was actively working to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the terminal.

The authority reassured passengers, airport workers, airlines, and the general public that no casualties or fatalities had been recorded as of the time of filing this report.

“FAAN wishes to inform the public that a fire incident has occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The FAAN Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) is currently responding to the incident and working diligently to contain the situation. There have been no reported casualties or loss of life,” the statement read.

The incident triggered concern among travelers, with passengers and airport staff evacuated from affected areas as thick smoke was reportedly seen rising from a section of the terminal. Emergency responders worked to secure the facility while airport officials coordinated safety measures to protect lives and airport infrastructure.

Although the exact cause of the fire had not been established at the time of publication, aviation authorities have indicated that a comprehensive investigation will be conducted once the situation is fully brought under control. Experts are expected to assess the extent of the damage and determine whether electrical faults, equipment malfunction, or other factors contributed to the outbreak.
The fire also resulted in temporary disruptions to scheduled flight operations, with some departures and arrivals delayed while emergency teams continued their work. Airlines are expected to provide passengers with updated information regarding their flight schedules.

Murtala Muhammed International Airport remains Nigeria’s busiest aviation gateway, handling millions of domestic and international passengers annually. Any disruption to operations at the airport often has significant implications for air travel across the country.
FAAN commended the professionalism and swift response of its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service, whose rapid intervention helped prevent the incident from escalating into a major disaster.

The authority appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, assuring Nigerians that updates would be released as investigations progress and more details become available.

The latest incident comes as airport authorities continue to strengthen safety measures and emergency preparedness across Nigeria’s airports to ensure the protection of passengers, personnel, and critical aviation infrastructure.
