Abuja, Nigeria – Nigerians from all walks of life converged on the National Merit Award House, Maitama, Abuja, on Monday, September 9, 2025, to commemorate the International Day of Peace. The event, organized by the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), featured goodwill messages and calls for citizens to strengthen peaceful and harmonious coexistence within their communities.
Speaking shortly after receiving his appointment letter as an Eminent Peace Ambassador of the United Nations, Chief Ambassador Jonathan Odejo Ikani expressed joy over the recognition. He described the honour as both a privilege and a testament to his contributions toward peace-building and humanitarian service in Nigeria.
Ambassador Odejo noted that the appointment would further inspire his commitment to advancing peace initiatives, not only in Nigeria but across the world. He pledged to sustain his peace-building efforts and humanitarian engagements, which he said were instrumental in earning him the recognition.
Calling on Nigerians to rise above ethnic and religious divides, Amb. Odejo emphasized the urgent need to prioritize peace and unity.
“We cannot progress and develop in a rancour- and crisis-ridden atmosphere. Peaceful and harmonious coexistence among ourselves is necessary for societal progress,” he said.
He also commended the International Association of World Peace Advocates for its efforts in identifying and honouring peace-builders and humanitarians across communities. According to him, such recognition would serve as motivation for others to actively engage in peace promotion. He assured that he would reciprocate the organization’s gesture by intensifying his advocacy and contributions toward peace-building.
