The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, upheld Julius Abure as the legitimate National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a ruling by Justice Emeka Nwite, the court affirmed the leadership that emerged from the March 2024 Nnewi Convention and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Abure’s chairmanship.
This judgment overrides INEC’s previous assertion that Abure’s leadership was invalid due to procedural violations in the national convention.
INEC had contended that the Labour Party’s convention breached the party’s Constitution and the Electoral Act, further arguing that Abure’s tenure had ended in June 2024. However, the court’s ruling has now clarified that Abure’s leadership remains legitimate.
