Dangote Refinery to Expand Capacity to 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day
Lagos – Dangote Industries Limited has announced plans to expand the capacity of its refinery to 1.4 million barrels per day, making it the largest refinery in the world. The expansion project, expected to be completed in three years, will position Nigeria as a major player in the global energy market.
The refinery, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, is currently undergoing construction and is expected to start operations soon. The expansion will increase the refinery’s capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, making it one of the largest refineries in the world.
The project is expected to create approximately 65,000 jobs during the construction phase, with over 85% of the workforce being Nigerian. The refinery will also enhance polypropylene production, increasing it from 900,000 metric tonnes to 2.4 million metric tonnes annually.
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries Limited, expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future and Africa’s potential, stating that the expansion reflects the company’s commitment to building energy independence for the continent. The refinery will also upgrade to Euro VI fuel standards, meeting global environmental benchmarks.
The expansion aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria to become a leading global supplier of refined petroleum products. Dangote commended the government’s supportive policies, including Nigeria’s First, Naira-for-Crude, and the One-Stop Shop initiative, which have driven industrial growth and investor confidence.
