Democracy Day: Alhaji Almaruf Salimonu Charges Nigerians to Remain Committed to Peace and Unity
By Obafemi Adeola
A Chieftain of the ruling All Progessives Congress in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi state, Alhaji Almaruf Salimonu has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in their commitment to peace, unity, and national cohesion as the country marks Democracy Day.
In his Democracy Day message released Friday, the community leader and public affairs commentator said democracy can only thrive when citizens prioritize tolerance and collective progress over division.
“Democracy is sustained not just by institutions, but by the attitude of the people. We must be committed to peace and unity in our homes, communities, and across the nation,” Alhaji Salimonu stated.
He noted that Nigeria’s diversity in ethnicity, religion, and culture should be seen as strength rather than a source of conflict. According to him, dialogue, mutual respect, and patriotism are critical to overcoming the country’s current economic and security challenges.
Alhaji Salimonu also urged political leaders to uphold transparency and justice, while citizens must play their part through responsible conduct and civic engagement.
“Let us use this Democracy Day to recommit to the ideals that bind us together. When there is peace, development and opportunities will follow,” he added.
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999 and honors the spirit of the annulled June 12, 1993 elections
