Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has announced a N20 million empowerment package for 200 residents of Lakwaya in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, as part of his ongoing efforts to strengthen grassroots development and support constituents affected by insecurity.
Senator Barau made the announcement when he received hundreds of constituents from Lakwaya at the National Assembly in Abuja. The delegation comprised religious leaders, traditional rulers, academics, students, youth groups, traders, farmers, transporters and other community stakeholders.
The delegation was led by Hon. Kabiru Ado Lakwaya, Special Assistant to the Deputy Senate President on Youth and Students, alongside Hon. Abdulmumini Garba Lakwaya, Vice Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area.
Under the empowerment scheme, each of the 200 beneficiaries will receive N100,000 to support small businesses and improve their livelihoods. Senator Barau also donated 10 motorcycles, 10 sewing machines, 10 grinding machines and five refrigerators to provide additional economic opportunities and alleviate the hardship facing residents.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the leaders expressed appreciation for Senator Barau’s interventions in Lakwaya, particularly in road construction, healthcare facilities, solar-powered streetlights and financial assistance to local businesses.
They described the interventions as significant contributions to the community’s development, noting that the projects had improved infrastructure, expanded economic opportunities and strengthened public confidence in democratic representation.
The delegation also commended Senator Barau’s efforts to address insecurity in the area, expressing hope that sustained collaboration with security agencies would restore lasting peace and enable residents to pursue their farming and commercial activities without fear.
In his response, Senator Barau acknowledged the security challenges confronting Lakwaya and other communities in Gwarzo Local Government Area. He assured the delegation that he was working with relevant security agencies and stakeholders to strengthen security and sustain the progress being recorded.
He further disclosed that arrangements were underway to assist farmers who could not cultivate their farms during the current farming season because of insecurity, recognising the impact of disrupted agricultural activities on household incomes and food production.
On infrastructure, the Deputy Senate President assured the delegation that their concerns regarding road construction, particularly the Tsaure Road and Giji Salawa Road, remained on his agenda.
The visit formed part of Senator Barau’s continuing grassroots engagements aimed at identifying the needs of constituents, strengthening community relations and ensuring that development initiatives respond to challenges facing rural communities.
The delegation assured the senator of its continued support and pledged to mobilise residents for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Senator Barau expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him, reiterating his commitment to promoting security, economic empowerment, infrastructure development and improved living standards across his constituency and Kano State.
The latest empowerment announcement underscores the importance of combining financial assistance with infrastructure development and security interventions, particularly in communities where insecurity has disrupted farming, trade and other sources of livelihood.
For residents of Lakwaya, the expectations now centre on sustained security improvements, support for affected farmers and the delivery of critical road projects to consolidate the gains of development and create better economic opportunities.
