Dr. Pokop Wushipba Bupwatda: Transformative and Purposeful Leadership

The Chief Medical Director of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Dr. Pokop Wushipba Bupwatda, has achieved significant milestones since taking office in October 2022. Some of his notable achievements include:
– Innovative Medical Care: Introduced the JUTH Smart Care/Mobile Clinic, revolutionizing Medicare at the hospital.
– Infrastructure Development: Renovated the Accident and Emergency Unit (A&E Unit) with support from Kefiano Global Foundation, and constructed a twin theater suite with Nigeria LNG’s support.
– Digitalization: Implemented an electronic medical record system, Health-in-a-box, and digitized the hospital’s record system.
– Staff Welfare: Recognized staff with awards and incentives, and paid salary arrears to outsourced staff.
– Partnerships: Fostered collaborations with organizations like Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, University of Jos, Federal College of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Technology, and National Primary Health Care Development Agency.
– Awards and Recognition: Received merit awards for his contributions to healthcare and social welfare.
His leadership has improved JUTH’s services, earning recognition from peers and stakeholders. His initiatives at JUTH have been transformative, addressing key challenges like infrastructure deficits and strained community relations. Under his leadership, JUTH has strengthened partnerships with Plateau State Government. The CMD’s administration also enhanced security with solar lights and surveillance equipment. He boosted staff morale by clearing salary arrears and increasing salary of outsourced staff from 18,000 to 30,000 naira. In fostering community engagement and corporate social responsibility, the hospital’s image has improved, with interventions from philanthropists and international organizations. Unions like the Association of Resident Doctors praise the CMD’s leadership.
