FISON EX- PRESIDENT TASKS NEW FELLOWS TO BE SELF-DRIVEN, EXPRESSES HOPE ON THE PROPOSED FISHERY ACT.
The immediate past President of the Fishery Society of Nigeria, (FISON) who is Currently the Rector of the federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bayelsa, Dr. Adegoke Agbabiaka has urged the newly inducted fellows of the the Society to be self- driven in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Dr. Agbabiaka who is also a fellow of the Society, said with the Conferement of fellowship Awards to the newly inductees, they had automatically assumed the highest position and a position of honour in the Society, Saying that it was incumbent on them to demonstrates Unwavering Commitments towards the advancement of the Discipline, and the marine and Blue Economy of the federal Republic of Nigeria.
Dr. Agbabiaka gave the admonition at the 39th FISON annual Conference, AGM and 20th fellowship investiture, with the theme, ” Unlocking the Investment Potential of Nigeria’s Blue Economy, Advancing the fisheries and Aquaculture Sector for Sustainable Development, held between 28th and 31st October,2024, at the National Universities Commission,Maitama Abuja.
Earlier, delivering his Speech as the Chairman of the AGM and 20th fellowship investiture, Dr. Adegoke Agbabiaka urged for a paradigm shift from theoretically inclined research work to adaptive or research that focuses on problem solving, he also advocated for the Overhauling of the Current Fishery Syllabi to the One that is more responsive to the Challenges affecting the Sector.
While Charging the Awardees to be more Committed to the activities of the Society, he also urged them to Carry the Younger members along in what ever they do so that every member of the society could have a sense of belonging in respective of academic qualifications.
Responding to question from Journalists on the efforts of the FISON on the Proposed Fishery Act which was yet to get the assent of Mr President, Dr . Agbabiaka said he was confident and Optimistic that the Bill will indefinitely see the light of the day Under the Current Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Minister who is familiar with the Presidency and other relevant Stakeholders.
He further Stressed that, the passage of the bill was foundamentally necessary to enable society Surmounts Some of the encumbrances affecting the Society,the Ministry and the entire Sector in general.
Continuing, Agbabiaka said during his stead as the president of the Society, the bill passed through all the legislative processes and rudiments, what was left to be done was only the Presidential assent , and that he was still Committed to towards ensuring that the bill becomes an act.
” I have Volunteer to take it up again, because without it we can not move forward, what we are teaching in the Universities are obsolete and Can no longer put food on our Tables,we are not moving with the tide, our Syllabi in the Universities needs to be reviewed.
