Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed profound grief over a devastating road accident that claimed the lives of more than 30 people in the early hours of Sunday at Kwanar Barde, in Gezawa Local Government Area of the state.
The tragic incident, which has thrown families and communities into mourning, reportedly involved a trailer heading toward Gujungu that crashed after allegedly being driven recklessly. Eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports indicate that the impact was severe, leaving several passengers dead on the spot while many others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to different hospitals across Kano State for urgent medical attention.
In a statement issued and signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf described the accident as heartbreaking and an immense loss not only to the families of the victims but to the entire people of Kano State.
“This is a painful tragedy that has touched all of us. Kano has lost sons and daughters whose lives were cut short in the most unfortunate manner,” the governor said.
Governor Yusuf extended his deep condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased, asking Allah (SWT) to grant them eternal rest and to give their loved ones the strength and patience to bear the irreparable loss. He also offered prayers for the speedy recovery of those currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
Demonstrating the state government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens, Governor Yusuf directed the Kano State Ministry of Health to ensure that all victims of the accident admitted in public health facilities receive free and adequate medical care without delay. He stressed that no victim should be denied treatment due to financial constraints.
In addition, the Governor instructed the Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to immediately assess the situation, document the casualties, and put in place support measures for the affected families, particularly those who lost breadwinners in the tragic incident.
Governor Yusuf also used the opportunity to issue a strong warning to motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to shun reckless driving and strictly comply with traffic rules and safety regulations.
“Lives are precious, and no journey is worth the loss of human life,” he cautioned, adding that adherence to traffic laws remains critical to preventing avoidable tragedies on the state’s highways.
The accident has once again highlighted the growing concern over road safety in the state, as residents call for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved safety measures to curb the rising incidence of fatal road crashes.
