HANDSHAKE ACROSS THE NIGER: TINUBU’S BRIDGE OF UNITY

For the good people of Idah Federal Constituency, September 3, 2026, was not just another day on the calendar, it was a day history smiled, politics danced, and the River Niger watched with satisfaction as two old friends shook hands again.
If rivers could clap, the Niger would have applauded.

Idah became the political oasis of Kogi as Senator Sunday Steve Karimi of Kogi West and Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho of Kogi East mounted the same platform, not to exchange political punches, but to exchange brotherly embraces while rallying support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
What happened was far more than a town hall meeting. In truth, the hall was merely a registration point. The real meeting was outside, where the crowd overflowed like the River Niger in the rainy season. Those inside the hall listened with excitement, those outside created another convention of their own.
The cultural troupes almost needed traffic wardens before they could reach the performance arena. The sea of humanity was so thick that every dancer had to negotiate a path through smiling faces before displaying their artistry. When the Igala cultural dancers finally took the stage, they shook every part of the body that was designed to shake. Even seasoned Yoruba spectators would have nodded approvingly and exclaimed, “Ajobiewe!”
It was not merely dancing, it was the dance of reunion.
It was not merely singing, it was the melody of reconciliation.
It was not merely politics, it was family coming back together.
The atmosphere instantly reminded many of the unforgettable “Back to Rescue” movement championed by Hon. James Abiodun Faleke and Prince Abubakar Audu,following the painful loss of the Prince of the Niger, Prince Abubakar Audu, that led to the historic 2015 governorship victory.
Many still remember how destiny interrupted that journey, but they also remember who refused to allow that interruption to become division. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stood firmly behind the Audu political family and strengthened the bond that produced Hon. James Faleke, a son of Kogi West who has since become a beloved son of Igala land.
That singular act built a bridge across the Niger that politics could not wash away.
The people spoke with one voice.
They recalled that before state creation, Kogi East and Kogi West shared a common political ancestry in the old Kwara State of the 70s. Today, they believe President Tinubu has simply helped restore that historic brotherhood.
Indeed, one good turn deserves another.
The message from Idah was loud enough for Lokoja to hear, and clear enough for Abuja to understand.
The Igala nation is not looking for another political home.
It has found comfort, respect and partnership in the All Progressives Congress.
With uncommon enthusiasm, voices rose from every corner:
“We shall remain in the party our leader gave us. Nobody can push us out of the APC. We shall stand firmly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and return him to Aso Rock with overwhelming votes.”
That declaration sounded less like a political slogan and more like a family covenant.
The joint appearance of Senators Karimi and Echocho sent a powerful signal that Kogi politics is entering a refreshing season where bridges matter more than boundaries, unity is stronger than geography, and friendship travels faster than the River Niger.
The famous “handshake across the Niger” is no longer just a beautiful phrase.
It has become a political reality.
As Kogi West and Kogi East lock hands once again, the road to the 2027 presidential election appears wider, smoother and brighter for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
When brothers stand together, victory becomes easier.
When East and West speak with one voice, elections become celebrations.
If the excitement witnessed in Idah is anything to go by, Kogi State may well be preparing not just to support President Tinubu, but to deliver one of the most emphatic electoral victories in its political history.
The handshake has begun.
The marriage has been renewed.
Now, the journey to victory continues, together.
