Hunger: Review Your Economic Policies, Group Tells Tinubu
A pro-democracy group, Turn by Turn Initiatives (TBTI) has called on President Bola Tinubu to review some of his economic policies which have brought untold hardship and hunger in the country.
In a statement, the National Convener of the group, Comrade Ben Nworie noted that the removal of fuel subsidy was reckless, and has resulted to harsh economic realities bedeviling the nations.
The National Convener noted that it was inciting for President Tinubu to tell Nigerians to ask their State governors what they were doing with funds accruing from federal allocation which have doubled as a result of subsidy removal.
He noted that such inciting statement may trigger another youths restiveness as witnessed during the #EndSars saga in the country.
The group added that Tinubu acted in haste to have removed the subsidy without robust economic plan that would have cushioned the effect of the subsidy removal.
“Nigerians can no longer pretend or smile over the biting hardship and hunger inflicted on citizens since President Bola Tinubu assumed office. The removal of fuel subsidy was reckless and hasty, especially when the Federal government doesn’t have robust and effective economic policies and programmes to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal”.
“It is even more worrisome for our President to ask citizens to hold their governors accountable for the huge resources accruing to States from the Federal allocations. Such inciting statement may trigger another restiveness and anarchy in Nigeria. There’s urgent need for the Federal government to take drastic steps to addressing the current economic hardship in the country”.
“It was expected that instead of pumping funds to States when some governors are really underperforming, Mr President should have channeled the excess funds in revitalizing some moribund industries that would have created jobs, and thereby lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty”.
“From the foregoing, it is crystal clear that nothing will get better if the Federal government refuses to review their economic policies. Fuel subsidy is not bad, but the corruption in the system has negated the positive impacts of the social intervention program”, Comrade said.
The group also advised President Tinubu and other political office holders to reject the proposed salary increment as such may further aggravate the anger of the Nigerians.
