NDC backs ‘Mama Amanda’s’ 2027 FCT Senate bid, says Abuja deserves better representation

By Ahiaba Douglas – Abuja

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled Barr. Austen-Peter Pam Iyabode Amanda, popularly known as Mama Amanda, as its senatorial candidate for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), saying her wealth of experience in governance, law and public service makes her the right choice to represent Abuja in the National Assembly.

In a statement issued by the party’s North Central Zonal Woman Leader, High Chief Nike Abdulrahman, the NDC said the FCT deserves a senator who is already familiar with the demands of the office and possesses a deep understanding of the law, governance and the needs of Abuja residents.

According to the statement, Barr. Amanda has built an impressive record of public service spanning law, politics and public administration.

It noted that she first sought elective office in 2003 when she contested for the House of Representatives under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), driven by a passion to serve the people.

The statement further recalled that she served as the Deputy National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where she gained extensive experience in party administration, legal matters and national politics.

It also highlighted her appointment as Mandate Secretary for Health in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), where she oversaw the FCT health system and contributed to healthcare administration at the executive level.

The party added that Barr. Amanda had also served as a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before joining the coalition that formed the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where she emerged as the party’s candidate for the 2027 FCT Senatorial election.

The statement said the FCT requires a senator with legal expertise to address issues relating to land disputes, demolitions and the protection of residents’ rights, adding that her background as a legal practitioner places her in a strong position to champion such causes.

It also stressed the need for greater attention to satellite towns, which it said have suffered years of neglect, noting that Barr. Amanda’s previous engagements in communities such as Bwari and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) have equipped her with firsthand knowledge of their developmental needs.

According to the party, women, children and other vulnerable groups also require stronger representation in the Senate, describing Mama Amanda as a compassionate leader committed to advancing their interests.

The NDC maintained that its candidate represents “proven leadership” rather than experimentation, urging FCT residents to support Barr. Austen-Peter Pam Iyabode Amanda in the 2027 senatorial election.

The statement described her as a lawyer, legislator, leader and “Mother of the Territory,” expressing confidence that her experience would strengthen the quality of representation for the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate.
