Kogi begins Mineral characterization, reserve estimation,
… as Gov. Ododo says “our minerals must work for us, we don’t have reasons to be poor.
The Kogi State Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources is set to begin Mineral characterization and reserve estimation.
The State Government made the disclosure through the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, added that it has engaged the services of the Nigeria geological survey agency (NGSA) for the
Mineral characterization and reserve estimation.
The Commissioner maintained that the reason for the Mineral characterization and reserve estimation is for the Mineral resources of the State to work for the people of the State, pointing out that the State has no reason to be poor.
The Commissioner explained that Mineral characterization and reserve estimation are crucial steps in the Mining industry, said
it involves determining the physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of a mineral deposit.
The characterization and reserve estimation the Commissioner disclosed will includes:
1. Identifying the types of minerals present
2. Analyzing their chemical composition
3. Determining their texture, structure, and liberation characteristics
4. Assessing their grade, quality, and potential contaminants
The information, the Commissioner added will help in understanding the deposit’s potential value, extractability, and processing requirements.
Similarly, the
Reserve estimation the Commissioner added involves quantifying the amount of mineral resources or reserves present in a deposit, pointing out that that it includes:
1. Estimating the tonnage and grade of the mineral deposit
2. Classifying the reserves into different categories (e.g., proven, probable, possible) based on confidence levels
3. Considering factors like geology, mining method, and economic viability
The reserve estimation Engr. Bashiru said will help in determining the economic viability of a mining project, planning production, and managing risks.
The two processes he further explained are interconnected, as accurate mineral characterization is essential for reliable reserve estimation.
He said by combining the two, mining companies can make informed decisions about exploration, development, and production in the State, described the present administration as doing the needful to ensure that the State get the maximum benefits of it solid Minerals that has been a sleeping giant over the years.
