Kogi Central 2027: Why APC Cannot Afford a Controversial Candidate

Lokoja, May 17, 2026 – As political activities intensify in Kogi Central, especially across the Okene, Okehi and Adavi axis, the APC Youth Progressive Forum and Concerned Kogi Central Youths are warning the All Progressives Congress against handing its ticket to a candidate whose eligibility could become a legal flashpoint.

The groups argue that in Nigeria’s current political reality, elections are no longer decided only at the ballot box. Increasingly, mandates are won or lost in courtrooms, and a single overlooked detail in a candidate’s records can undo months of campaign work overnight.

They insist that the APC National Working Committee (NWC) must avoid any decision that exposes the party to embarrassment, litigation, and public disgrace.

Pointing to past cases across Nigeria, the forum notes that certificate issues, qualification disputes, delegate process flaws, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act have become common tools for opposition parties and aggrieved aspirants to challenge election results.

Kogi itself has seen courts nullify APC congresses and entertain multiple suits over candidate qualification and party procedure.

“The lesson is simple: one legal loophole can destroy years of political work,” the statement said.

The youth groups caution that if questions remain about a candidate’s academic records, documentation, or eligibility, the APC must not dismiss them for short-term political convenience.

They warn that rival parties are watching closely and are ready to drag the APC into prolonged court battles immediately after the polls.

Beyond the risk of losing a case, they argue, the greater damage is to the party’s image in Kogi Central. Once a candidate’s qualification becomes a public controversy, the campaign narrative shifts from development and governance to scandal and courtroom drama.
“Politics is strategy, not emotions. The APC must not walk into a trap that can be avoided from the beginning,” the forum stated.

They cite precedents where candidates faced disqualification battles over certificate allegations and where courts ruled that parties failed to comply with the Electoral Act in conducting primaries. For a party with strong support in Kogi Central like the APC, they say, strength alone is not enough without legal insulation.

The groups urge the NWC to rise above pressure, sentiments, and personal interests, and to subject every aspirant’s document to careful scrutiny and every allegation to proper investigation.
“The people of Kogi Central deserve stability, not endless litigation. It is better for a political party to pause and correct internal issues than to win an election today and lose everything tomorrow inside the courtroom,” they said.

Concluding with the adage “a stitch in time saves nine,” the APC Youth Progressive Forum and Concerned Kogi Central Youths call on the party to act now, carefully and responsibly, to protect its chances in Kogi Central.
