“Kogi Has Lost a Father, Elder and Statesman” — Comrade Joel Salifu, Mourns Ibrahim Idris
The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Comrade Joel Salifu, has mourned the death of former Governor of the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, describing his passing as a painful loss to his family, the Igala Kingdom, Kogi State and Nigeria.
Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, who governed Kogi State from 2003 to 2012, reportedly died in a hospital in the United Kingdom after a brief illness.
In a condolence message issued on September 20, 2026, the Deputy Governor described the late former governor as a respected elder and statesman who devoted a significant part of his life to the service of Kogi State and its people.
Comrade Salifu said the death of the former governor had created a significant vacuum among the people, particularly in the Igala Kingdom, where he was widely regarded as an elder and former leader.

“I join my principal, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and associates, as well as my dear people of Igala Kingdom, on this unfortunate incident. His passing is a great loss to our people,” he said.
The Deputy Governor further prayed for the repose of the former governor’s soul and for divine comfort for the bereaved family and the people of Kogi State.
“On behalf of my family, I pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him Aljannatul Firdaus, while giving his family, the entire Igala Kingdom and the state, the strength to bear this painful loss,” he added.
Comrade Joel Salifu’s condolence was contained in a statement signed by Unubi Emmanuel, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Kogi State.
