Kogi Political Appointments Spark Outcry Over Alleged Lopsidedness
A growing number of political stakeholders in Kogi State have raised concerns over what they describe as an “undeniable and troubling imbalance” in recent political appointments, alleging that key positions in the state government are overwhelmingly concentrated in Okene Local Government Area, the home of the current governor and his political father.
According to members of the Kogi APC Justice Forum, the distribution of appointments has sidelined other parts of the state, particularly Kogi East and Kogi West, creating what they call “a dangerous pattern of domination” that threatens unity and fairness.
Beyond what they describe as “countless” Special Assistants and Senior Special Assistants drawn from Okene, the group listed a number of strategic offices currently occupied by individuals from the same local government. These include:
1. Supreme Leader – (Okene LGA)
2. Executive Governor – (Okene LGA)
3. Chief of Staff – (Okene LGA)
4. Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice – (Okene LGA)
5. Head of Service – (Okene LGA)
6. Accountant General – (Okene LGA)
7. Commissioner for Health – (Okene LGA)
8. Commissioner for Rural Development and Power – (Okene LGA)
9. Chairman, Pension Board – (Okene LGA)
10. Chairman, Board of Internal Revenue – (Okene LGA)
11. Chairman, SUBEB – (Okene LGA)
12. Director General, Government House – (Okene LGA)
13. Director General, Land Bureau – (Okene LGA)
… among several others.
The forum claims that this trend has created the impression that Kogi East and West have been relegated to the background in the political structure of the state. They warn that no part of Kogi should be made to feel like “second-class political citizens” in a state that belongs equally to all.
In a statement made available to journalists, the Kogi APC Justice Forum declared that “the people of Kogi East and West are not slaves,” insisting that equity demands a rebalancing of political power in the state.
The group has therefore renewed its call for power rotation, saying that the governorship must return to Kogi West in 2027. They insist that this is the only fair and just path forward.
The statement concluded with a firm position: “This imbalance cannot and must not continue beyond 2027. On power rotation we stand—firmly, boldly, and unshakably.”
