Kogi SWAN Congratulates Governor Ododo’s One Year Of Good Governance, Calls for Improved Sports Development

Kogi State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has extended heartfelt congratulations to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo on the occasion of his one-year anniversary in office, commending his leadership and commitment to governance.

The message was formally adopted during the SWAN Congress held on January 29, 2025, at the NUJ Press Center, Lokoja, where members acknowledged the governor’s strides in various sectors of the state.

While commending his administration’s efforts in promoting peace, unity, and development, the Congress emphasized the urgent need for increased attention to sports development in the state.

A Call for Revitalized Sports Infrastructure and Policies

In the congratulatory message, Kogi SWAN urged the governor to prioritize the revitalization of sports infrastructure, particularly the state’s deteriorating sports facilities, which have been a long-standing concern for athletes, sports administrators, and enthusiasts.

The Association highlighted the need for sustainable policies that would enhance grassroots sports development, talent discovery, and investment in sports across various disciplines.

Speaking during the congress, the Chairman of Kogi SWAN, Bishop Aturu emphasized the role of sports in youth engagement, crime reduction, and economic growth, stating that a well-structured sports sector can contribute immensely to the state’s economy and development agenda.

Commendation for Recent Efforts in Sports

The Congress also acknowledged ongoing efforts in certain sports sectors, particularly the renovation of the Handball Court in Lokoja, championed by the Kogi State Handball Association.

While commending such progress, the Association called for a broader intervention across all sports disciplines, urging the government to create an enabling environment for athletes and sports professionals to thrive.

SWAN’s Commitment To Sports Advocacy

As the umbrella body for sports journalists in the state, Kogi SWAN pledged to continue its advocacy for improved sports development, increased funding, and effective policies that would elevate sports in the state to national and international standards.

The Association reiterated its readiness to collaborate with the State government, private sector, and other relevant stakeholders in advancing the state’s sporting aspirations.

A New Era for Kogi Sports

With Governor Ododo’s administration now entering its second year, Kogi SWAN expressed optimism that sports will be given greater attention as a key driver of youth empowerment, tourism, and social development.

The Association stressed the need for the state government to take proactive steps in rehabilitating sports facilities, establishing training programs, and supporting athletes to compete at higher levels.

As the anniversary celebrations continue, Kogi SWAN remains hopeful that Governor Ododo will leave a long lasting legacy in sports development, ensuring that Kogi State becomes a hub and powerhouse in Nigeria’s sporting ecosystem.
