Mahdi Shehu Dismisses Kano Metropolitan Rail Project as Political Deception.

January 2, 2026.

A Kaduna-based political analyst and public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has strongly dismissed the proposed Kano Metropolitan Rail Project, describing it as a political deception lacking any concrete foundation in official government planning.

In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Shehu argued that there is no evidence of the rail project in the 2026 federal budget proposals, raising serious questions about the credibility of government claims surrounding the initiative.
According to him, infrastructure projects of such magnitude cannot exist merely as media soundbites or political promises without clear documentation, feasibility studies, and budgetary allocation.

“Is the Kano Metropolitan Rail Project genuinely planned or merely another political promise?” Shehu queried. “Can a major infrastructure project exist without appearing in the national budget?”
He maintained that large-scale rail developments typically require years of planning, approvals, and transparent funding structures, none of which, he said, have been publicly presented in the case of the Kano project.

Shehu further challenged political leaders and relevant authorities to provide tangible proof of the project’s existence, including budget lines, timelines, and implementing agencies.
“Are politicians deliberately misleading the public, or is this project being quietly developed behind closed doors?” he asked. “Should citizens not demand proof and budgetary details before accepting such grand announcements?”

Shehu’s comments come barely 48 hours after Senator Rufai Hanga also expressed deep skepticism about the proposed rail project, describing it as deceptive and unlikely to ever materialize. Senator Hanga reportedly warned residents of Kano against raising expectations based on what he termed “empty political rhetoric,” stressing that previous administrations had made similar promises that never progressed beyond announcements.

The Kano Metropolitan Rail Project has been touted by government officials as a transformative transportation initiative aimed at easing urban congestion, boosting economic activity, and modernizing the ancient commercial city. However, the absence of verifiable documentation has fueled growing public doubt.
Civil society groups and policy analysts have also begun calling for greater transparency, urging the federal government to publish detailed project plans if the rail scheme is indeed under consideration.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic pressures, budget constraints, and competing infrastructure needs, analysts warn that unverified projects risk eroding public trust and undermining confidence in governance. For now, the Kano Metropolitan Rail Project remains shrouded in uncertainty—caught between official optimism and mounting skepticism from political observers and stakeholders alike.
