Mbuti people from Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Shortest Tribe in the world
The Mbuti people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are the shortest tribe in the world, with an average height of 4 ft 6 in (1.37 m) for men and 4 ft 5 in (1.35 m) for women.
Some groups average even shorter, with men at 4 ft 4 in (1.32 m) and women at 4 ft 1 in (1.24 m).
The Mbuti are part of the Bambuti, a collective name for four populations of Ituri Pygmies: the Sua, Aka, Efe, and Mbuti.
They live in the Ituri Forest in eastern Congo and are thought to be the earliest inhabitants of the area.
Some possible reasons for their short stature include:
Traveling through impenetrable forests and eating a few calories
Adapting to the low UV radiation levels in rain forests, which restricts their ability to absorb calcium from food for bone formation.
