Media Consultancy Services Strongly Condemns the Arrest of Journalist Ibrahim Ishaq Danuwa Rano Calls for His Immediate and Unconditional Release.
By Amana Media Consultancy Services
Kano, Nigeria – 19th October 2025
The Management of Amana Media Consultancy Services unequivocally condemns the unjust arrest and continued detention of journalist Ibrahim Ishaq Danuwa Rano, founder of Danuwa Rano TV, by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Command, Kano.
Mr. Danuwa was reportedly arrested following an online audio commentary in which he alleged that a government official was collecting money from individuals seeking to see the Kano State Governor. Crucially, the audio made no direct mention of names, yet it is alleged that the Director-General of Protocol to the Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, filed a formal complaint, prompting this troubling police action.
This arrest represents a dangerous precedent—a clear misuse of state power intended to intimidate and silence the press. Such action undermines the very foundation of democratic governance and mirrors a growing pattern of intolerance towards journalists and whistleblowers in Kano State and across Nigeria.
Freedom of expression and press freedom are fundamental rights enshrined in Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and protected under Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which Nigeria is legally and morally bound to uphold.
It is deeply alarming that rather than investigate the substance of Mr. Danuwa’s claims, the authorities have chosen to criminalize free speech and journalistic inquiry. The Nigeria Police Force must not become a tool for suppressing dissent or shielding public officials from scrutiny. Journalism is not a crime.
We, therefore, demand the immediate and unconditional release of Ibrahim Ishaq Danuwa Rano. We urge the Nigeria Police and the Kano State Government to refrain from further acts of harassment and to respect the constitutional rights of journalists and all Nigerian citizens.
We also call on civil society organizations, professional media bodies, legal practitioners, and human rights advocates to raise their voices against this blatant abuse of power. A society that suppresses press freedom denies itself access to truth, justice, and accountability.
Amana Media Consultancy Services remains committed to defending media independence, freedom of expression, and the digital rights of all Nigerians. We will continue to resist all forms of censorship, intimidation, and repression—wherever they occur.
Signed,
Alhaji Bala Salihu Dawakin Kudu
