Mob Action Leaves Three KAROTA Personnel Hospitalized: Calls Grow for Better Public Relations Training and Improved Road User Engagement.

Three personnel of the Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) have been hospitalized following a mob attack after a tragic road accident involving a Sharon commercial bus and a trailer along Kwanar Dawaki on the Kano–Zaria Road.
According to the leader of the KAROTA patrol team on the route, Ibrahim Abubakar Ibrahim, the agency had stopped the Sharon commercial bus for a routine traffic inspection when a trailer, allegedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the bus. The impact caused the vehicle to somersault several times, leaving many passengers with varying degrees of injuries.

He explained that while KAROTA personnel were attempting to rescue the victims, some angry youths and passengers, apparently blaming the officials for the incident, attacked the officers. Three KAROTA personnel sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
The trailer driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident, taking advantage of the confusion as emergency efforts focused on rescuing the injured passengers and KAROTA officials.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of KAROTA, Abubakar Ibrahim Sharada, the Managing Director of the agency, Faisal Mahmud Kabir, appealed to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with uniformed personnel carrying out their lawful responsibilities.
He urged citizens to respect law enforcement officers, noting that they represent government efforts to maintain safety, order, and sanity on the state’s roads. He also commended the injured KAROTA personnel for their dedication and sacrifice in the discharge of their duties despite the risks involved.
Public Concerns Over KAROTA Operations
Meanwhile, the incident has reignited public debate over the relationship between KAROTA personnel and road users across Kano State.
Some commercial drivers and members of the public have complained that certain enforcement officers focus more on collecting fines or penalties at checkpoints than educating motorists on traffic regulations and road safety.
They argued that enforcement should be accompanied by awareness and guidance aimed at preventing violations before punitive measures are taken.
Legal practitioners note that traffic enforcement agencies are established to enforce traffic laws within the powers granted to them by relevant legislation. Their responsibilities include traffic control, ensuring compliance with road traffic regulations, and taking lawful enforcement actions where necessary. At the same time, public education and respectful engagement with motorists are widely regarded as essential elements of effective traffic management.
Educationists Advocate Special Training
Education experts and public policy analysts have also called on the management of KAROTA to provide its personnel with regular training in public relations, conflict resolution, communication skills, and customer service.
According to the experts, improving officers’ interaction with motorists and members of the public would strengthen public confidence, reduce confrontations during enforcement operations, and encourage voluntary compliance with traffic regulations.
They maintained that when there is mutual respect and cordial relationships between traffic officers and road users, drivers are less likely to flee from enforcement officers, resist lawful directives, or engage in violent attacks on government personnel and property.
The analysts further observed that better community engagement could help prevent unfortunate incidents in which angry mobs resort to destroying government vehicles, vandalising offices, or attacking traffic officials performing their lawful duties.
They stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among government agencies, commercial drivers, private motorists, passengers, and the general public.
As investigations into the Kwanar Dawaki accident continue, stakeholders hope the unfortunate incident will serve as an opportunity for renewed reforms in traffic management, improved public awareness, and stronger collaboration between KAROTA personnel and the communities they serve.
