NITP Seeks Stronger Partnership with Kogi Government on Urban Renewal, Sustainable Development

By Adamu Jimoh

The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Kogi State Chapter, has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the Kogi State Government and other key stakeholders in the preparation and implementation of development plans, urban renewal programmes, infrastructure provision, and effective development control mechanisms aimed at promoting sustainable growth and economic prosperity across the state.

The Chairman of the NITP in Kogi State, Town Planner Sani Daniel, made this known in a statement issued to commemorate the Institute’s 60th anniversary of professional excellence and service to Nigeria.

Daniel called on governments at all levels, development partners, private sector organisations, and members of the public to continue supporting the planning profession, describing it as a critical instrument for achieving sustainable development, resilient cities, and an improved quality of life for citizens.

According to him, the planning profession remains indispensable in addressing emerging challenges associated with rapid urbanisation, environmental degradation, climate change, housing deficits, and infrastructure development.

“As the Institute marks sixty years of professional excellence, we remain committed to our vision of creating livable, inclusive, productive, and sustainable human settlements throughout Nigeria,” he stated.

He added: “The role of professional town planners has become even more critical in today’s rapidly changing environment. Proper planning is the foundation upon which sustainable communities, functional infrastructure, and economic development are built.”

Reflecting on the Institute’s journey, Daniel noted that the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, established in 1966, has remained a leading professional body dedicated to promoting sustainable physical planning and orderly development of human settlements across the country.

“For six decades, the Institute has remained at the forefront of advancing the science and practice of town planning, contributing significantly to national development through the preparation of master plans, urban renewal programmes, land-use management, environmental sustainability initiatives, infrastructure planning, housing development, and capacity building for professionals in the planning sector,” he said.

Daniel further recalled that the Institute was founded by nine pioneering town planners led by Pa S.O. Tokun in Ibadan and has since evolved into Nigeria’s foremost professional planning organisation, with active chapters across the federation and members serving in both the public and private sectors.

“From its humble beginning in 1966, the NITP has grown into a respected institution whose members continue to shape the physical, social, and economic development of communities across Nigeria,” he noted.

“As we commemorate this historic milestone, the Kogi State Chapter celebrates the vision, dedication, and sacrifices of the founding fathers, past leaders, and members whose commitment has strengthened the profession and enhanced the quality of urban and rural development in Nigeria.”

The NITP chairman also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of town planners in promoting environmental stewardship, improving land administration, mitigating the effects of climate change, and ensuring orderly physical development for present and future generations.

He stressed the need for greater collaboration among governments, professional bodies, investors, and communities to achieve sustainable urban growth.

“We must continue to work together to ensure that our towns and cities are planned, resilient, safe, and economically viable. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without effective physical planning and strict adherence to development control regulations,” Daniel said.

He added that the Kogi State Chapter remains committed to supporting policies and programmes that will enhance urban renewal, improve infrastructure delivery, and create healthier and more productive communities across the state.

“The future of our cities depends on the decisions we make today. Through collaboration, innovation, and professional excellence, we can build communities that meet the needs of current residents while preserving opportunities for future generations,” he said.

Daniel urged stakeholders to leverage the expertise of professional town planners in the formulation and implementation of development policies capable of driving inclusive growth and sustainable development across Nigeria.
