The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State, on Wednesday organised a joint Ramadan and Lent get-together aimed at fostering unity and strengthening professional harmony among members of the chapel.
The event, convened by the chapel’s executive committee led by Chairman Abiola Azeez of Tribune Newspaper, brought journalists together at the chapel secretariat for spiritual reflections, candid discussions and refreshments.
Azeez said the gathering became necessary in view of recent developments within the chapel, particularly the loss of respected members. He noted that the demise of former chairman, Layiwola Olanrewaju, and the passing of member Saka Laro seven months earlier were sobering reminders of life’s fragility.
“These are sobering developments that should make us reflect on what we do and how we prepare for the eventualities of life,” he said, urging members to remain united and supportive of one another.
In his remarks, former chairman and veteran journalist, Elder Wole Adedeji, described the coinciding observance of Ramadan and Lent by Muslims and Christians as deeply symbolic.
According to him, the overlap should serve as a divine call for unity and mutual respect among members irrespective of religious affiliation.
“It speaks of something divine and must be a message urging unity among us regardless of which religion we belong,” Adedeji said.
Also speaking, Mumuni Abdul Kareem of Daily Trust reminded Muslim members of the spiritual significance of Ramadan, Islam’s holiest month, stressing the importance of forgiveness, reflection and compassion.
The gathering ended on a note of renewed solidarity, with members pledging to deepen cooperation and maintain cordial working relationships within the chapel.
