Nurses, Midwives issue strike notice to Kano govt

By Bala Salihu Dawakin kudu.
( Northern Bureau Chief)
On Oct 2, 2024

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) in Kano State has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the state government, demanding the resolution of several key issues affecting its members or face an impending industrial action. This announcement came after a series of unresolved grievances, leading to the decision during the association’s State Administrative Council meeting.

In a notice signed by the association’s acting State Secretary and Public Relations Officer, Comrade Ahmad Hamzat Sharada, the nurses declared that if their demands are not met by October 16, 2024, they would withdraw their services from both clinical facilities and training institutions across the state. The demands include:

Payment of the Reviewed Hazard Allowance for Nurses.

Harmonization of the Scheme of Service for Nurses.

Payment of the 259% Upward Review of the CONHESS Salary Structure for Nurses.

This ultimatum follows closely after a similar threat by the National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners in Kano, which set October 1, 2024, as the start of their indefinite strike due to the state government’s failure to honor its agreements with medical doctors.

The escalating labor tension highlights significant dissatisfaction within Kano’s healthcare sector, potentially leading to widespread disruption of medical services.
