The Kogi State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd.), has organised a mega empowerment programme in Oke-Offin, Olle/Oke-Offin Ward of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, where about 250 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The programme attracted APC leaders, supporters, community stakeholders and residents from the ward as well as the Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency.

The initiative was organised as part of efforts to promote grassroots empowerment, enhance economic opportunities and strengthen political participation within the community.

Speaking at the event, Omodara said the empowerment programme was conceived about 25 years ago, when he was still serving in the Nigerian Navy, as part of his personal commitment to giving back to his community and contributing to the overall development of society.

He explained that the initiative was designed to improve the economic well-being of members of the community by providing them with tools, equipment and financial assistance capable of supporting their livelihoods.

Items distributed to beneficiaries included sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers, motorcycles, work tools, mats and cash, among other forms of assistance.

The beneficiaries were drawn from different categories of residents, with the empowerment expected to enable them establish or expand small-scale businesses, acquire vocational skills and improve their household income.

The event also witnessed the formal defection of about 250 members of the PDP and ADC to the APC. The new members were received by APC leaders and supporters at the gathering.

The decampees said their decision to join the APC was based on their assessment of developments in the state and their desire to identify with the ruling party at the grassroots.

While welcoming the new members into the APC, Omodara urged them to remain committed to the party and contribute positively to the development of their communities.

He also stressed the importance of grassroots engagement, noting that political leadership should be reflected in programmes and initiatives that have a direct impact on the lives of ordinary citizens.

The mega empowerment programme also provided an avenue for APC stakeholders and community members to interact with residents and deliberate on issues concerning the development of Olle/Oke-Offin Ward and the wider Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the event, Omodara commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the great work his administration is doing across the country and in Kogi State, particularly in the area of infrastructure.

He stressed that the 2027 general elections would provide the people with an opportunity to demonstrate their support through their votes.

Omodara also acknowledged the efforts of Governor Usman Ododo in the area, stressing that the Kabba–Oke-Offin–Olle–Iluke road is expected to be awarded for construction within the next three weeks.

He further stated that the APC remains the dominant political party in Kogi State, adding that the recent defection had further strengthened the party’s presence in the area.

According to Omodara, the group that defected at the event represented the remaining opposition supporters in the area, adding that their decision to join the APC had further consolidated the party’s grassroots support.

The event climaxed with the presentation of the empowerment items and cash assistance to beneficiaries, alongside the formal reception of the new members into the APC.
