His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, Delta State. Speaking at the university’s 4th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, March 15, 2025, President Tinubu, represented by Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Munakurogha Adigio, Vice-Chancellor of Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, emphasized that FUPRE plays a critical role in Nigeria’s economic development, given the country’s vast oil and gas resources.

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring that every Nigerian student has access to quality education. He highlighted key initiatives such as the Student Loan Scheme, the National Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Program, and expanded scholarship opportunities—designed to equip young Nigerians with skills necessary to drive economic growth and national development.

In his address, President Tinubu stated:

“As a government, we are committed to supporting FUPRE, particularly in securing opportunities that will enable it to fulfill its mandate as a leading institution in the energy sector. However, achieving this vision requires a collaborative effort. We call on industry leaders, stakeholders, and Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to partner with the federal government in transforming FUPRE into a global hub for energy education and innovation.”

Charging the university’s leadership, President Tinubu urged them to take the lead in advancing sustainable energy research and innovation, emphasizing the need to equip the next generation with expertise in managing Nigeria’s energy future.

“To the leadership of FUPRE, I charge you to spearhead sustainable energy research and innovation. You have the responsibility to train the next generation of energy experts, as indigenous professionals take the lead in shaping the future of the sector,” he declared.

Addressing the graduating students, President Tinubu underscored their pivotal role in driving transformation within Nigeria and Africa.

“Nigeria and Africa are looking up to you to lead societal transformation. You are the engineers, scientists, and innovators who will develop sustainable energy solutions, create industries, and tackle global challenges. While oil and gas remain central to our economy, the future lies in renewable energy, and Nigeria must be at the forefront of this transition. I urge you to embrace innovation, adaptability, and emerging technologies.”

He further encouraged the graduates to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance their skills and contribute meaningfully to society.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, Torungbuwa I I, Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, who serves as FUPRE’s Chancellor, expressed deep appreciation for President Tinubu’s unwavering support for the institution. He prayed for wisdom, strength, and resilience for the president in steering the nation towards greater heights.

Similarly, FUPRE’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Engr. Bello Gachi Issa, highlighted the progress made under the current administration in strengthening the university’s academic and administrative structures.

“With a clear mandate to drive this institution towards global recognition, we have made notable strides in enhancing administrative processes, improving infrastructure, and boosting staff morale. Our commitment remains steadfast in positioning FUPRE as Africa’s premier institution for petroleum education and a world-class hub for research and innovation in the oil and gas sector,” he stated.

In his welcome address, FUPRE’s Vice-Chancellor, Engr. Prof. Akpofure Rim Rukeh, recognized the presence of distinguished guests, including Delta State Governor, His Excellency Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori; Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo; and representatives from the Minister of Education, TETFUND, and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He noted that the convocation is not only Celebrating the graduates but also marked the conclusion of his five-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor.

“It has been a journey of growth and achievements, and I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of the university community,” he said.

Prof. Akpofure Rim Rukeh disclosed that a total of 3,369 students graduated this year, including 2,683 undergraduates and 686 postgraduates, with 51 students earning First-Class Honours. He expressed pride in the increase in female graduates, reflecting FUPRE’s commitment to gender equity.

The Vice-Chancellor announced key milestones achieved under his leadership, including the approval of new colleges and programs by the NUC:

College of Maritime and Offshore Studies – Offering B.Sc. degrees in Maritime Transport and Logistics, and Maritime Economics and Finance.
College of Computing – Introducing degrees in Software Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology, along with a Ph.D. in Computer Science.

“These additions mark a bold step toward academic excellence and industry relevance, preparing students for leadership roles in key sectors,” Prof.
Akpofure noted.
