Promoting a Drug-Free Kwaya Kusar: AADRAI Seeks Strategic Partnership with Local Council to Combat Substance Abuse.

In a significant step toward addressing the growing challenge of substance abuse at the grassroots level, the Advocacy Against Drug Abuse and Rehabilitation Awareness Initiative (AADRAI), Kwaya Kusar Chapter, Borno State paid an advocacy and partnership visit to the Executive Chairman of Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area, Hon. Tahir Hamma Pick II.
The visit formed part of the organization’s sustained efforts to establish strategic partnerships with key stakeholders in promoting drug abuse prevention, rehabilitation awareness, and community development. The delegation highlighted the urgent need for collaborative action to tackle substance abuse and its far-reaching public health, social, economic, and security consequences, particularly among young people.
Speaking during the meeting, the Legal Adviser of AADRAI, Comrade Bukar Muhammad Durum, presented a comprehensive overview of the organization’s vision, mission, and objectives. He explained that AADRAI is committed to preventing substance abuse through sustained public enlightenment campaigns, drug demand reduction initiatives, advocacy for rehabilitation and reintegration of affected individuals, youth empowerment, and community-based interventions aimed at creating safer and healthier communities.
Comrade Durum stressed that the fight against drug abuse cannot be left to government alone, noting that meaningful progress requires strong collaboration among government institutions, traditional leaders, religious organizations, educational institutions, civil society organizations, parents, and community members.
As part of the visit, the Kwaya Kusar Coordinator of AADRAI, Engr. Abubakar Mohammed Yamari, formally presented the organization’s letter of introduction to the Executive Chairman, reaffirming AADRAI’s readiness to work closely with the local government in implementing programmes and initiatives that will protect young people from the dangers of substance abuse.
Responding, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Tahir Hamma Pick II, applauded AADRAI for its timely and proactive intervention in addressing one of the critical social challenges affecting communities. He acknowledged that drug abuse remains a serious threat to public health, family stability, education, security, and sustainable development.
The Chairman expressed the commitment of the Kwaya Kusar Local Government Council to partner with AADRAI and other relevant stakeholders in promoting awareness, prevention, and rehabilitation programmes across the local government. He assured the delegation of the council’s support for initiatives that would empower youths, discourage substance abuse, and build a peaceful, healthy, and productive society.
The visit concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration through advocacy campaigns, community engagement, and preventive programmes aimed at reducing the prevalence of substance abuse in Kwaya Kusar.
The partnership is expected to contribute significantly to creating a drug-free environment where young people can realize their full potential and actively contribute to the socio-economic development of Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area and Borno State at large.
