SDP Urges Senate to Mandate Electronic Transmission of Election Results
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed disappointment and concern over the resistance of the 10th Senate leadership to include a legislative mandate for electronic transmission of election results in the ongoing Electoral Act reforms.
In a statement, SDP National Publicity, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, said the party is worried by the Senate’s deliberate attempts to go against the popular will of Nigerians, who have demanded real-time transmission of election results through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
The SDP emphasized that the majority of senators, Nigerian citizens, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) want to move forward in ensuring integrity and transparency in elections. The party warned that self-serving cabals in the Senate should not hold democracy hostage and urged citizens, civil society groups, and democrats to resist attempts to undermine the country’s democratic progress.
The SDP demands that the new Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) 2026 includes an unambiguous legislative mandate for electronic transmission of results in real-time to prevent manipulation and ensure credible elections in 2027.
