Senator Kawu Sumaila Confirms Defection from NNPP to APC

By Bala Salihu Dawakin Kudu
April 23, 2025

Senator Suleiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, the representative of the Kano South Senatorial District, has officially confirmed his departure from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His announcement on social media put an end to the mounting political speculation that had surrounded his intentions for weeks.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, Kawu Sumaila affirmed, “Yes, it is true — the rumours regarding my defection are accurate.” This remark effectively closed the chapter on rumors that had been swirling around his political future.

The Senator, who has represented Kano South for several years, explained that his decision to join APC was motivated by a deep sense of duty to the people he serves. “All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency,” Kawu Sumaila said, emphasizing that his political moves were firmly rooted in the desire to serve his constituents better.

He further explained that his decision to join the APC was not just about personal or party politics but about the broader goal of ensuring long-term prosperity for the people of Kano South. “I am resolutely determined to advance the lives of my people, ensuring their needs are met and their future is secured,” he stated.

In addition to confirming his defection, Senator Kawu Sumaila issued a stern warning to the Kano NNPP chair, Dungurawa, over some unresolved issues, including alleged attempts to discredit his political career. The Senator made it clear that he would not hesitate to pursue legal action if his name and reputation continued to be besmirched.

“My commitment to my constituents remains steadfast. I will continue to work towards good governance, ensuring that the people of Kano South always come first in my political journey,” he affirmed.

Kawu Sumaila’s political shift has already begun to stir interest in the Kano political scene. As the first major defection of its kind in recent times, many political observers are eagerly awaiting his next steps and how this move will impact the dynamics of both the APC and the NNPP within the region.

The Senator’s defection has undoubtedly added a new layer of complexity to Kano’s political landscape, with both parties carefully strategizing in response to his move. For now, the focus remains on his promises of continued service and his ambition to better the lives of those who entrusted him with their votes.
