In a significant political development, the Deputy Senate President and Senator representing Kano North Senatorial District, Senator Barau I Jibrin, today received prominent grassroots leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from Makoda Local Government Area into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The decampees include notable figures such as Alhaji Abdullahi Zilama Makoda, former Secretary of the NNPP in Makoda, and Alhaji Dauda Rabe, former Secretary of the NNPP Caucus, along with a large contingent of their loyal supporters. These leaders officially renounced their membership of the NNPP—described as a “mushroom party”—and pledged allegiance to the APC, the largest political party in Africa.
The reception took place at Senator Barau’s residence in Abuja and was attended by top party stakeholders, including the member representing Danbatta/Makoda Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari.
While addressing the new entrants, Senator Barau welcomed them warmly and assured them of equal treatment and opportunities within the APC. He emphasized the party’s openness and commitment to inclusive growth, adding that their defection marks a major boost for the APC in Kano State.
“We are one family in APC. You are now full members, and I assure you that you will be treated with fairness, respect, and equality. Together, we will continue to build a stronger party and a better future for our people,” Senator Barau stated.
Speaking on behalf of the decampees, Alhaji Abdullahi Zilama Makoda expressed gratitude for the warm reception and pledged to mobilize more NNPP members into the APC. He praised Senator Barau for his exemplary leadership, describing him as “the most well-known and respected politician Kano State has ever produced.”
This latest defection is seen as a major political shift in Kano North, further consolidating the APC’s dominance in the region ahead of future electoral contests.
