Senior Lawyer threatens court action against Baze University over alleged admission scam

By Chukuma Ateri

A parent, Gozie Bertrand Obi, has threatened to institute court action against Baze University, Abuja over what he described as admission fraud into the Bachelor of Medcine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Degree Programme at the institution.

Obi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN in a petition he sent to Force CID Abuja of the Nigeria Police, dated 21st April, 2026., said the University wrongly denied his ward admission after fulfilling all requirements as directed by the university.

He accused the university of obtaining money from students seeking admission into the programme under false pretences.

He further alleged that, “the criteria which Baze University used in determining the students to be admitted into the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree Programme was also fraudulent and without consideration of merit, contrary to the directive of JAMB.”

Obi insisted that he would stop at nothing in ensuring that his ward and other students affected get justice

He said, “my ward who scored 313 in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) applied for and was by letter dated 21st July 2025, offered admission by Baze University into the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Degree Programme, for the 2025/2026 Academic Session commencing on 3rd September, 2025.

“After accepting and fulfilling the requirements for admission into the programme, including payment in July 2025, of tuition and hostel fees to secure the admission as directed in the admission letter, my ward was issued Matriculation Number BU/25//MED/12256 on completing registration in September 2025, meaning that she was number 25 in the total number of students offered admission for the programme.”

“After commencement of academic lectures for the programme in September 2025, it was discovered that Baze University Abuja deliberately offered admission and admitted about 500 students, far and above the 100 (One hundred) students approved for admission per session by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, into the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Degree Programme of Baze University.

“Baze University collected tuition fee of #4,542,037.50 and hostel fee of #2,602,849.55 per academic session from all the said students amounting to #2,000,000,000.00 (Two Billion Naira).”

He continued, “Baze University by deliberate design, and with a view to defrauding some of the students offered admission, including my ward, between July and November 2025 failed to forward their names to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to validate their admission by Baze University for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Degree Programme.

“Baze University knew that she over admitted students for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Degree Programme long before the closure of JAMB admission portal for the 2025 admissions, and if they are sincere, they would have informed the students that they will not be admitted promptly and refunded the fees they paid to enable the students apply to other Universities for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree Programme. The plan of the university was, however, to keep the affected students in the institution for a session and appropriate the fees they paid”

“It was in March 2026, after the first term examination, which my ward passed all the courses that Baze University without notice switched my Ward to the Human Anaomy Programme. My ward had to withdraw from the university as a result. I will explore all avenues under the law to obtain redress against this fraud and injustice meted to my ward and other students, ” Obi added.

However, when contacted, the Baze University, through a staff in the admission office who pleaded anonymity, insisted that the ward among other affected students would still be reabsorbed into the programme if they passed stipulated examinations.

According to him, “the school management is aware of the matter and has assured all concerned that their admission as students of Medicine and Surgery of the University are not in any way aborted. We just want them to write the necessary examinations and those who passed the exams would surely advance to the second year.

“Regarding the other issues you mentioned, as much as I know they are not true, I am not in the better position to respond to them. The university has appropriate personnel that will do that. And if you can come to the university now, I will take you to the Provost of the Medical department to give further explanation regarding the whole issue.”

Obi SAN, however, dismissed the explanation of the university. According to him, “If the affected students including my ward were validly admitted, where is their JAMB admission letters. Why did they issue JAMB admission letter to some other students who applied alongside my ward and left others including my ward. Also, why were those students not compelled to write the said examinations as well.”
