The Perils of Premature Endorsement: A Threat to Democracy

By Pastor Stanley Ajileye

The recent endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the sole candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election has sparked widespread concern. This move is not only hasty but also undermines the fundamental principles of democracy. By anointing a candidate without allowing the democratic process to run its course, we risk stifling competition, creativity, and the very essence of democratic participation.

The haste with which this endorsement was made raises questions about the motivations behind it. Is it a genuine expression of confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership, or is it a calculated attempt to curry favor? Whatever the reason, the outcome is the same: a charade that undermines the democratic process. We must not forget the lessons of history, particularly the dark days of military rule under General Sani Abacha, where dissent was crushed, and democracy was trampled upon.

Democracy thrives on competition. It is the engine that drives innovation, accountability, and progress. By prematurely endorsing a candidate, we risk stifling this competition and denying the Nigerian people the opportunity to choose from a range of qualified candidates. This is not only undemocratic but also potentially disastrous for the nation’s progress.

While President Tinubu may be well-intentioned, telling him that he will not be rivalled in the 2027 poll would be a great disservice to this nation and to democracy. It would deny him the opportunity to prove himself in a competitive environment, where ideas are tested, and leaders are held accountable. Moreover, it would undermine the democratic process, potentially leading to disillusionment and disengagement among citizens.

As we look to the future, it is essential that we prioritize democracy and the democratic process. This means allowing competition to flourish, encouraging participation, and ensuring that the voices of all Nigerians are heard. Only through this process can we build a truly democratic society, where leaders are accountable, and citizens are empowered.

In conclusion, the premature endorsement of President Tinubu as the sole candidate for the APC in the 2027 presidential election is a worrying trend that undermines democracy. We must prioritize competition, participation, and the democratic process, ensuring that the voices of all Nigerians are heard. Only then can we build a truly democratic society that serves the interests of all its citizens.
