TO AN AMBASSADOR DESIGNATE — LEADERSHIP BEYOND THE APPOINTMENT
A Special Felicitation to Engr. Sani Ndanusa, FNSE, FNICE, FNIM (Marafan Nupe)
The Engr. Sani Ndanusa Support Group (ESNG) with other followers, his family, staff & Management of Assafwa Academy, friends, colleagues, associates and admirers warmly felicitate with you, Sir, on your nomination as an Ambassador Designate by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
While we look forward with confidence to your successful appearance before and confirmation by the Senate Screening Committee, we also eagerly anticipate His Excellency, the President’s final accent and assignment of a diplomatic portfolio to you.
This nomination is not merely a recognition of your accomplishments; it is a call to greater national service.
TO A DISTINGUISHED LEADER AND MENTOR WHO IS ABOUT TO BECOME AN AMBASSADOR
As you prepare to enter this new chapter of service, Your Excellency Sir, my strongest advice is simple:
Learn. Listen. Consult. Build bridges. And make mentoring a deliberate part of your leadership.
Diplomacy, like every serious leadership responsibility, will introduce you to people who know things you may not know. You will encounter career diplomats whose institutional knowledge spans decades, scholars with deep understanding of international relations, professionals with specialised expertise, younger Nigerians carrying fresh ideas, and stakeholders whose experiences may offer perspectives you had not previously considered.
Listen to them.
Your experience, accomplishments and stature have earned you this opportunity, but no individual possesses all the wisdom required to navigate every situation.
Build a circle of people who can advise you honestly. Surround yourself with individuals who are courageous enough to tell you the truth respectfully, challenge your assumptions constructively and support the larger national interest above personal considerations.
You may also encounter what I call the “landlord mentality”—people who believe that because they have occupied a space for a long time, they have an exclusive claim to it.
In diplomacy, as in every institution, there may be resistance to new ideas, new approaches and new relationships.
Do not allow such resistance to distract you.
Not every disagreement requires confrontation. Not every provocation deserves a response. Sometimes, wisdom is knowing when to speak, when to listen, when to negotiate and when to quietly stand your ground.
Let patience be your strength, wisdom your compass and results your loudest voice.
Your diplomatic assignment, when confirmed and formally entrusted to you, will carry the weight of Nigeria’s interests, image and aspirations.
You will not merely represent yourself.
You will represent Nigeria.
That responsibility requires dignity without arrogance, firmness without hostility, patriotism without prejudice, and diplomacy without compromising principle.
Your greatest achievement will not simply be the meetings you attend, the dignitaries you encounter or the agreements you help facilitate.
It will be the bridges you build.
The relationships you strengthen.
The opportunities you create for Nigeria.
The doors you open for Nigerian businesses, young people, investors, professionals and institutions.
And ultimately, the confidence you inspire in others about the Nigeria you represent.
LEADERSHIP IS MORE THAN THE OFFICE
An ambassadorial appointment is an office, but leadership is a responsibility.
One day, your tenure will end. Another ambassador will occupy the residence, carry the credentials and assume the responsibilities of representation.
The office will remain.
The diplomatic relations will continue.
The national flag will continue to fly.
The deeper question, therefore, will be:
What became better because Engr. Sani Ndanusa was there?
Which relationships became stronger?
Which doors opened for Nigeria?
Which young Nigerian diplomat discovered greater confidence because you mentored him or her?
Which Nigerian enterprise gained access to a new opportunity because you facilitated the connection?
Which difficult relationship became a constructive partnership because you chose dialogue over division?
Which people will look back at your tenure and say:
“He made a difference.”
For me, that is the deeper meaning of public leadership.
It is not merely about occupying an exalted position.
It is about leaving footprints that continue to guide others after you have departed.
FROM ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE TO DIPLOMATIC SERVICE
Your professional journey has already demonstrated that leadership is about competence, discipline, service and the courage to take responsibility.
From your accomplishments as an engineer and distinguished professional to your service in leadership and public affairs, your nomination represents an opportunity to translate years of experience into a broader platform of national service.
The transition from engineering and institutional leadership to diplomacy may be a new chapter, but the fundamental principles remain the same:
Analyse carefully.
Build deliberately.
Solve problems creatively.
Work with people.
Deliver results.
The world is increasingly interconnected. Nigeria requires ambassadors who understand that modern diplomacy is not only about political relations.
It is also about trade, investment, technology, energy, infrastructure, education, culture, tourism, security, climate action and human capital development.
This is where experienced Nigerians such as you can make a meaningful difference.
THE CALL TO LEAVE A LEGACY
We are all, in one way or another, standing on the shoulders of people who came before us.
Some are still with us.
Some have gone ahead of us into eternity.
But their footprints remain.
The stories are many.
The lessons are even greater.
May your forthcoming diplomatic assignment become another significant chapter in a life of service, achievement and impact.
May you carry the dignity of Nigeria with distinction.
May you build bridges where others see walls.
May you open doors where others see barriers.
May you mentor those coming behind you.
And may your service contribute meaningfully to a stronger, more respected and more prosperous Nigeria.
Congratulations, Engr. Sani Ndanusa, FNSE, FNICE, FNIM, Marafan Nupe — Ambassador Designate.
We await with confidence your successful Senate screening and confirmation, followed by the Presidential accent and assignment of portfolio.
The journey ahead is greater.
The responsibility is heavier.
But so too is the opportunity to serve.
Nigeria is calling.
Diplomacy awaits.
History is watching.
May you serve with distinction.
