UK Professor, Francis Fatoye, Secures Adjunct Professorial Chair at UI’s College of Medicine

– Opeyemi Ologun, Abuja

A United Kingdom–based academic, Professor Francis Fatoye, has been appointed Adjunct Professor at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. The appointment adds to his expanding portfolio of professorial roles across institutions in Africa and Europe and reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen transnational academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Professor Fatoye is Professor of Health Economics and Outcomes at Manchester Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. He also holds several international academic appointments including Extraordinary Professor at North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa; Visiting Professor at University of Nigeria Nsukka; Adjunct Professor at Bayero University, Kano; and Adjunct Professor at Great Lakes University of Kisumu, Kenya. His latest appointment at Ibadan aligns with the university’s effort to integrate global expertise into Nigeria’s health research and training ecosystem.

Professor Fatoye’s academic path reflects a transdisciplinary orientation. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from the University of Ibadan in 1991, and later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA), MSc in Sports Medicine, MSc in Health Economics and Health Policy, and a PhD in Physiotherapy from institutions in the United Kingdom. His work sits at the intersection of clinical science, economic evaluation, and public health systems.

He began his career in clinical practice in Nigeria as a Physiotherapist at the State House Clinic, Aso Rock in 1993, before moving into academia in the United Kingdom, where he attained professorial rank. This progression illustrates the value of combining clinical experience with advanced training in health systems and policy.

Beyond his academic work, Professor Fatoye maintains active ties with his roots in Igbaruku in Okunland of Kogi State. His continued engagement with his community reflects an approach that connects international academic work with local relevance.

The appointment is expected to support mentorship, collaborative research, and knowledge exchange between institutions. Such linkages are important for addressing complex health and development challenges within Nigeria and similar contexts.

Professor Fatoye has published over 370 peer-reviewed articles including conference presentations and has supervised 26 PhD candidates. The professor of health economics and outcomes has attracted over 9.5 million pounds in research funding the Manchester Metropolitan University where holds a substantive professorial appointment.

His new role at the University of Ibadan is expected to provide a platform for sustained academic collaboration and contribution to medical education and research in Nigeria.
