When Tears Become Contraband: Ijumu LG Chairman’s Desperate Ban

In Ijumu Local Government Area, the atmosphere remains heavy with sorrow following the untimely demise of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Late Hon. Mayowa Solomon Oyewole. Yet, as the community struggles to absorb the shock of his passing, the political leadership has responded not with empathy, but with an iron fist. In an extraordinary move following public outcry from the people of Aduge, the Local Government Chairman placed a sweeping ban on all public gatherings connected to the late chairman’s death.

The decision has ignited fierce criticism across the constituency, raising fundamental questions about the temperament and counsel guiding the council’s leadership.

At the center of the dispute is a fundamental constitutional conflict: the right of citizens to assemble and express their grief versus an administration intent on silencing public sentiment. When a community loses a prominent figure under sudden and unsettling circumstances, public reaction is inevitable. Rather than creating avenues for dialogue, transparency, and communal solace, the local administration has opted for administrative decrees aimed at stifling collective mourning.

The suddenness of Hon. Mayowa Solomon’s death has naturally unsettled residents, especially amid lingering memories of unresolved tragedies within the local political sphere. Community members frequently point to a troubling pattern, recalling the untimely losses of individuals like Kunle Alaho, Mesaiyete, and Ismail Yahaya. In an environment already fraught with suspicion, heavy-handed measures do little to restore confidence; instead, they deepen public skepticism.

While political opportunism often surfaces during moments of tragedy, conflating legitimate public grief with public disturbance is a severe miscalculation. The imposition of an outright prohibition on gatherings surrounding a bereavement borders on callousness. A leadership disconnected from the pain of its constituents risks eroding whatever moral authority it holds.

True governance requires emotional intelligence, especially during crises. Suppressing the voice of a grieving people does not eliminate their questions—it only magnifies their resolve to seek answers. Ijumu deserves leadership that consoles rather than confronts, and an administration that upholds the fundamental freedoms of its people rather than criminalizing their tears.
