WHY INSECURITY AND ECONOMIC CRISIS COULD DENY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU A SECOND TERM IN 2027.

In the 2023 presidential election, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a total of 8,794,726 votes, which earned him victory and the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. A significant portion of this support came from the South-West geopolitical zone, where he recorded an estimated 2.5 to 3.0 million votes across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti States. This region formed the core of his electoral strength and political foundation.

However, as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, emerging political and security realities suggest that this support base may no longer be guaranteed. Rising insecurity, worsening economic hardship, and growing public dissatisfaction are increasingly reshaping voter sentiment across the country.

The escalating insecurity across Nigeria has become one of the most serious challenges facing the Tinubu administration and a major factor that could determine the outcome of the 2027 elections. Armed banditry, Boko Haram insurgency, ISWAP attacks, and recurring communal conflicts continue to destabilize many regions, weakening public confidence in the government.

In Northern Nigeria, which played a decisive role in Tinubu’s 2023 victory, insecurity has reached alarming levels in states such as Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, Borno, Sokoto, and Kebbi. Rural communities have been repeatedly attacked, leading to mass displacement, loss of livelihoods, and the collapse of local economies.

These conditions have deepened poverty, forced mass migration from rural to urban areas, and significantly reduced trust in government institutions.

Beyond insecurity, Nigeria is also grappling with severe economic challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, and increasing cost of living. These factors have intensified public frustration, especially among young people and low-income households.

In many parts of the country, citizens are increasingly judging the government based on immediate economic realities rather than political promises. This growing dissatisfaction could translate into reduced electoral support for the ruling party in 2027.

While the South-West delivered the largest share of votes for Tinubu in 2023, political signals from the region suggest that this support may not remain stable. Economic pressure, unemployment, and declining living standards are beginning to influence public opinion even in traditional strongholds.

In the South-East, APC historically records low support, while in the South-South, its influence remains limited and inconsistent. Any further decline in voter confidence in the South-West could significantly weaken APC’s national electoral strength.

A breakdown of the 2023 election shows, South-West approximately 2.5 – 3.0 million votes for Tinubu, South-East: less than 0.5 million votes for APC and South-South: about 0.7 – 1.0 million votes, depending on APC influence in certain states. These figures highlight a critical reality: APC’s national victory heavily depends on maintaining strong dominance in the South-West. Any erosion of this base could be politically costly in 2027.

Several factors suggest that the ruling party may face a tougher electoral battle in 2027, Persistent insecurity across multiple regions,
Economic hardship and rising cost of living, Declining public trust in government performance, Internal political tensions within the ruling party and Growing voter demand for visible and measurable change. If these issues remain unresolved, the APC may struggle to maintain the coalition of support that delivered victory in 2023.

The 2027 general elections are likely to be shaped by how effectively the government addresses Nigeria’s most pressing challenges—security, economic stability, and public trust. Without significant improvements in these areas, especially in regions that previously delivered strong electoral support, the ruling party may face a serious decline in voter confidence.

In this context, political analysts increasingly argue that the path to a second term for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is becoming more uncertain, as public dissatisfaction continues to grow across key voting blocs that once formed the backbone of his electoral victory in 2023.
