WHY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MUST URGENTLY INTENSIFY ITS INTERVENTION IN THE ALARMING INSECURITY PLAGUING KOGI WEST SENATORIAL OF KOGI STATE

By Musa Bakare

Despite the Federal Government’s continued efforts to protect lives and property across Nigeria, the rise in insecurity remains a serious threat to peace, development, and national unity. At present, few regions are as gravely affected as the Western Senatorial District of Kogi State.

Once known for its peace, industry, and law abiding the citizens of the districts encompassing Lokoja-Koto, Kabba-Bunu – Ijumu and Yagba communities has become a hotspot for violent crime. Fear now grips the people as criminal activities spiral seemingly out of control.

Over recent months, there has been a surge in kidnappings, armed robbery, and brutal attacks on travelers and villages. Farmers have abandoned their fields, local economies have stalled, and residents are left at the mercy of marauding Fulani bandits and gangs. The situation is dire and it demands a more intense immediate federal intervention.

One particularly horrifying case was the abduction of an over 80-year-old second-class traditional ruler from his palace in Okoloke, Yagba West LGA. Kidnapped in the dead of night and taken deep into the forest, he was held for ransom treated like an ordinary property rather than a respected community elder. This act is not only despicable but an urgent signal that no one is safe.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, has pledged to secure the nation and protect every Nigerian. The people of Okunland have shown firm belief in this promise and continue to support the administration wholeheartedly.

Many parts of Okunland are now overrun by heavily armed bandits. Communities are losing hope, and the threat has grown beyond the capacity of state and local governments.

Kogi West has stood by the APC and President Tinubu’s leadership through thick and thin. With the farming season underway, farmers must be protected to return to their fields. Businesses must be revived, and children must attend school without fear.

Insecurity anywhere in Nigeria is insecurity everywhere. The Federal Government must not let Kogi West sink further into violence and despair. The time to act is now.

Musa Asiru Bakare writes from Lokoja, Kogi State Capital.
