KADUNA — At least 30 people have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack on Naridon Village in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, in what residents have described as one of the latest tragic episodes of violence to hit Southern Kaduna.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, reportedly claimed the lives of women, children and other residents, while several houses were set ablaze, leaving the community devastated and forcing many survivors to flee for safety.
Community sources, Ibrahim John and Mallam Katuka, confirmed the incident in separate WhatsApp messages, saying the village was overwhelmed by heavily armed attackers who unleashed violence on defenseless residents.
According to information gathered from residents, at least 30 bodies have so far been recovered from the community. However, fears remain that the death toll could rise as search-and-recovery operations continue and more missing persons are accounted for.
The latest massacre has intensified concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Kauru Local Government Area and other parts of Southern Kaduna, where communities have repeatedly come under attack in recent years.
Residents described scenes of grief and destruction as families mourned loved ones and assessed the damage caused by the attack. Several homes were reportedly reduced to ashes, leaving many families homeless and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Community leaders have appealed to the Kaduna State Government, the Federal Government and security agencies to immediately deploy additional security personnel to the affected communities. They also called for sustained military operations, improved intelligence gathering and stronger measures to prevent further attacks on vulnerable rural settlements.
The incident adds to the growing wave of violence and kidnappings that has continued to plague Southern Kaduna despite repeated calls for stronger security interventions.
Just days earlier, reports indicated that at least eight people linked to two groups of hostages abducted from Ariko and Awon villages in Kachia Local Government Area had died while in captivity. According to journalist and former Kaduna State Government spokesperson Reuben Buhari, seven of the deceased were among residents abducted from Ariko village, while the eighth was a newborn delivered by a woman kidnapped from neighbouring Awon village.
The victims were said to have spent more than three months in captivity under harsh conditions before their deaths, highlighting the persistent security challenges confronting communities across Southern Kaduna.
The latest attack on Naridon Village is expected to renew calls for comprehensive security reforms, improved protection for rural communities and swift justice for victims of violent attacks. As grieving families bury their dead, residents continue to urge authorities to act decisively to restore peace, safeguard lives and prevent further bloodshed in the region.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies and the Kaduna State Government had not issued an official statement on the attack.
