Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano is usually a place where nights fall gently—children’s laughter fading into silence, lanterns flickering behind mud walls, and families settling into sleep after a long day. But on one tragic night, that calm was shattered by an act so brutal that it would leave the entire community in shock and mourning.
The victims were a housewife and her six innocent children, all found murdered in their home under circumstances that pointed to a carefully planned and merciless attack. By the time neighbors sensed that something was terribly wrong, it was already too late. The cries that might have saved them were swallowed by the darkness of the night.
The Crime and the Shock
According to police investigations, the attack occurred quietly, with no immediate alarm raised. The killers struck with deadly precision, using crude but lethal weapons. Blood stained the walls and floors of what had once been a place of warmth and family life. By morning, Dorayi Chiranchi was no longer just a neighborhood—it had become a crime scene, and Kano State was gripped by grief and anger.
News of the massacre spread rapidly, sparking outrage across the state. Residents demanded justice, while religious leaders and community elders called for calm and prayers for the souls of the departed.
Swift Police Action
The gravity of the crime prompted immediate intervention from the highest levels of the Nigeria Police Force. Acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Kano State Police Command launched an intensive, intelligence-led operation.
Under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, detectives worked through the night—tracking movements, analyzing intelligence, and following clues provided by community members. The operation reached its peak during a carefully coordinated sting that ran from 10:00 p.m. on January 17 to 4:00 a.m. on January 18, 2026.
Three principal suspects were arrested:
Umar Auwalu (23)
Isyaku Yakubu, popularly known as Chebe (40)
Yakubu Abdulaziz, also known as Wawo (21)
Their arrest marked a major breakthrough in a case that had shaken Kano to its core.
During interrogation, police revealed that Umar Auwalu, the alleged ring leader, made a chilling confession. He admitted to taking part in the killing—and more disturbingly, disclosed that he was a nephew to the deceased housewife. The betrayal stunned investigators and the public alike, adding a painful layer of treachery to an already horrific crime.
Auwalu further confessed that the same group had been involved in previous violent crimes, including the murder and burning of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano, a case that had earlier baffled investigators.
Evidence Recovered
Searches conducted during and after the arrests led to the recovery of disturbing items believed to have been used during the attacks. These included:
1. Four blood-stained clothes.
2. Two mobile phones belonging to the deceased
A cutlass
3.A wooden club (gora)
4. Cash and other dangerous weapons.
These items, now in police custody, are expected to play a crucial role in the prosecution of the suspects.
Police Assurance and Public Support
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Kano State Police Command commended the professionalism and speed of its operatives. The Command also expressed deep appreciation to members of the public whose information, cooperation, and prayers contributed to the breakthrough.
While investigations are ongoing, the police have assured residents that justice will be served and that no effort will be spared in ensuring peace and security across the state.
As Dorayi Chiranchi buries its dead, the pain remains raw. Seven lives—cut short in the most brutal way—serve as a reminder of the fragility of peace and the devastating consequences of violence driven by greed, hatred, or betrayal.
Yet amid the sorrow, there is a measure of relief: the killers have been found, and the wheels of justice have begun to turn. For Kano, the hope now is that such darkness will never again descend on a family’s home in the dead of night.
