A Small Body with a Big Engine: Celebrating the Transformational Stewardship of Professor Olayemi Akinwumi
By Pastor Stanley Ajíleye
When the story of purposeful leadership in Nigeria’s university system is told, the tenure of Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, outgoing Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), will stand as a compelling chapter of vision, courage, and uncommon achievement.
Appointed in February 2021, Professor Akinwumi assumed office at a time when the university, like many young federal institutions, was grappling with structural limitations, manpower shortages, and infrastructural deficits. What followed, however, was not a cautious administration, but one of the most productive and transformative eras in the history of the Federal University Lokoja.
A distinguished Professor of History and an eminent scholar, Akinwumi brought to office more than academic credentials. He brought institutional memory, a deep understanding of the university ecosystem, and a sincere identification with the aspirations of the host community. His tenure reaffirmed the wisdom of entrusting leadership to those who understand the soul of an institution and are committed to its growth.
Within just two years, Professor Akinwumi surpassed the combined achievements of the two previous administrations, particularly in the critical areas of programme accreditation, academic expansion, and infrastructural development. Faculties and departments expanded, academic and administrative structures were strengthened, and the university recorded massive accreditation successes across newly introduced programmes.
Most striking was the accreditation of high-profile and highly competitive programmes such as Medicine and Surgery, Engineering, Nursing Sciences, Law, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, among others. These programmes were not only introduced but fully accredited, at a time when even older and more established Nigerian universities continue to struggle with securing approvals in these same disciplines. This singular achievement speaks volumes about the administrative competence, strategic planning, and persuasive leadership of the Akinwumi administration.
What makes these feats even more remarkable is that they were accomplished despite a prolonged embargo on staff employment throughout most of his tenure. Yet, without the liberty to recruit the required manpower, Professor Akinwumi still secured accreditation for all newly introduced programmes. This remains one of the most astonishing accomplishments in the annals of the university, underscoring a rare mix of ingenuity, diplomacy, and effective management of scarce resources.
Beyond academics, his administration recorded visible infrastructural transformation. The development and habitation of the permanent site of the university, once considered an uphill task, became a reality under his watch. The crowning achievement in this regard is the acquisition of a 1.72MWp–4MWh Hybrid Solar Electrification System, capable of delivering 24-hour off-grid power supply—an unprecedented feat not just in FUL, but across Nigerian universities. This singular intervention positioned the university as a national reference point in sustainable campus energy solutions.
Professor Akinwumi also reinvigorated the university’s intellectual culture. When he assumed office, the institution had recorded only two inaugural lectures. Today, that number stands at thirty-seven, reflecting a revived academic confidence, scholarly productivity, and a restored culture of intellectual celebration.
Equally significant was his success in attracting notable personalities, partners, and investors to identify with and invest in the growth of the Federal University Lokoja. Through strategic engagement and personal credibility, he opened the university to goodwill, collaboration, and external support that strengthened its profile and prospects.
As his five-year tenure expires on Friday, February 13, 2026, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi fittingly exemplifies the metaphor of a small body with a big engine—a leader whose impact far exceeded the limitations of circumstance.
It is therefore appropriate that this landmark exit from office will be commemorated with the public presentation of two significant publications. The first is his memoir, Not A Walk In The Park: A Vice-Chancellor’s Story, a reflective account of the trials, triumphs, and lessons of university leadership. The second, Humility Sparks Progress: A Historico-Literary Narrative on Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, authored by the renowned literary scholar Professor Al Bishak of the Federal University Lafia, offers an intellectual tribute to his modest but profound contributions to university education—from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, to his transformative stewardship at FUL.
As Professor Akinwumi bows out, his service deserves not only commendation but meaningful recognition from both the state and the federal government. Nigeria’s education sector still needs men of his energy, experience, humility, and proven capacity. His engine remains strong, and his impact on the nation’s academic future is far from spent.
