ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES INTERRUPTED AS PLASU-ASUU DECLARES TOTAL, COMPREHENSIVE AND INDEFINITE STRIKE
_Students’ Resumption Put on Hold as Lecturers Down Tools Over Unmet Demands_

JOS — Academic activities at Plateau State University, PLASU, have been disrupted following the declaration of a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, PLASU Branch.

The strike was declared on Wednesday, 26th August, 2026, just one or two weeks to the scheduled resumption of students.
The Branch Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Vincent Choji, confirmed the development in an interview with our correspondent in Jos.
“Yes, we have embarked on strike this morning and we have written to the Vice Chancellor. Our demands are still not met. We issued a two-week ultimatum and it elapsed yesterday,” he said.
Dr. Choji recalled that during the NEC meeting of ASUU held on 8th and 9th August, 2026 at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, about 20 public universities, mostly state-owned, were given the nod to embark on strike if their demands were not met.
Some of the demands by PLASU-ASUU include:
Partial implementation of the 2009 ASUU/Federal Government Agreement
Commencement of the Pension Scheme
– Payment of 22 months arrears of the 25%/35% wage award
– Provision of befitting staff quarters, among others
The strike is expected to dampen the hopes of many candidates and applicants who have chosen PLASU as their first choice, as the university is on the verge of releasing its first admission list.
Some students who were already preparing for resumption have appealed to the Governor of Plateau State, who is the Visitor to the University, to intervene and meet the lecturers’ demands.
“As the general elections are approaching, we want to resume early so that we can cover our curriculum before the elections,” one of the students said.
