The Kano State Transition Committee (STC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the purported establishment of a caretaker committee for the party in Kano State by Hajiya Naja’atu Muhammed, describing the move as unconstitutional, illegal, and without any legal or political effect.
The committee made its position known in a statement issued on Monday by the Kano State Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Comrade Sa’idu Bello, and made available to journalists in Kano.
According to the statement, the committee expressed concern over what it described as a unilateral attempt by Naja’atu Muhammed, who reportedly presented herself as the party’s National Vice Chairman for the North-West, to constitute a caretaker committee for the Kano State chapter of the party.
The STC maintained that such action violates the provisions of the ADC Constitution and undermines the party’s legitimate leadership structure in Kano State.
The committee further argued that the office of National Vice Chairman (North-West), which Naja’atu Muhammed is said to be claiming, no longer exists under the amended ADC Constitution adopted during the party’s National Convention held on April 14, 2026, in Abuja.
According to the statement, while the previous constitution provided for five National Vice Chairmen representing various geopolitical zones, the amended constitution replaced that arrangement with only two National Chairmen representing the Northern and Southern regions of the country.
Based on this constitutional amendment, the committee asserted that Naja’atu Muhammed no longer occupies any national office within the party and therefore lacks the authority to exercise control over the Kano State chapter or any other state within the North-West geopolitical zone.
The Kano STC also emphasized that the authority to establish caretaker committees rests exclusively with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and other constitutionally recognized organs of the ADC, not with any individual party official.
It added that no directive, authorization, or approval had been issued by the party’s National Headquarters empowering Naja’atu Muhammed to set up a caretaker committee in Kano State.
The committee described the development as an act of anti-party activity allegedly designed to create division, confusion, and parallel leadership structures within the ADC in Kano State.
It further stated that the purported caretaker committee was constituted outside the procedures laid down in the party’s constitution, which requires that any interim leadership arrangement must receive approval through the appropriate constitutional channels.
The statement also expressed concern over what it described as Naja’atu Muhammed’s recent involvement in internal party disputes, alleging that her actions could undermine the peaceful growth and stability of the ADC in Kano State.
The committee further claimed that external interests might be influencing the situation with the intention of weakening the party in Kano State and across Northern Nigeria.
While reaffirming its commitment to unity, peace, and constitutional order within the party, the Kano State Transition Committee called on the national leadership of the ADC to urgently intervene by taking appropriate measures to prevent actions capable of disrupting the party’s activities in the state.
The committee urged the party’s national leadership to safeguard the ADC’s constitutional processes and ensure the continued unity, stability, and development of the party in Kano State and beyond.
