Al-Hikmah University, security agencies unite to promote peace and security

In commemoration of the 2025 International Peace Day, Al-Hikmah University , Ilorin partnered with security agencies to discuss ways to strengthen peace and security in Nigeria.
The event, themed “Community Policing in a Polarized World as a Panacea for Sustainable Peace and Security in Nigeria: The Role of Stakeholders,” brought together stakeholders to explore solutions to the country’s security challenges.
Al-Hikmah University Vice Chancellor, Professor Lateef Folorunsho Oladimeji, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to collaborating with security operatives to enhance peace and security.
“The issue of insecurity requires an all-inclusive approach,” he emphasized.
The Acting Director of the Al-Hikmah University Center for Peace and Security Studies, Dr. A A Adekola, called on communities to partner with security agencies to promote sustainable peace.
“Communities should partner with security agencies in community policing to achieve sustainable peace and security,” he urged.
The Kwara State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Umar JG Muhammed, highlighted the importance of community policing in crime prevention and control.
“The role of stakeholders, particularly members of society, in crime reduction cannot be overemphasized,” he said, commending Al-Hikmah University for the initiative.
The representative of the Kwara State Police Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Idachaba Friday Adamu, noted that traditional policing is no longer sufficient in the face of insurgency, terrorism, and other security challenges.
“Deep ethnic, religious, political, and socio-economic divisions have fueled mistrust between citizens and law enforcement, making people reluctant to share information with the police,” he said.
The participants emphasized the need for inclusive and collaborative approaches to address Nigeria’s security challenges. The event highlighted the importance of partnership in promoting peace and security in Nigeria.
