Amnesty Programme Has Achieved Its Purpose in Niger Delta – Ex-Militant General Emma Satu

Ahiaba Douglas,Abuja

An ex-militant from Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, General Emma Satu, has described the Federal Government’s Presidential Amnesty Programme as a major success, saying it has largely achieved the objectives for which it was established.

Speaking to journalists, General Emma Satu said the programme was introduced to rehabilitate former agitators, provide vocational training, award scholarships to youths in the Niger Delta, and create a peaceful environment for uninterrupted oil exploration and production.

According to him, these objectives have been substantially achieved over the years through sustained government commitment to the programme.

He commended the Federal Government for maintaining the Amnesty Programme since its inception nearly two decades ago, noting that the initiative has played a significant role in restoring peace, stability, and normalcy across the Niger Delta region.

General Emma further explained that since the programme was introduced, the Federal Government has consistently introduced various empowerment initiatives aimed at improving the economic and educational well-being of youths in the region through vocational skills acquisition, scholarship schemes, and other capacity-building programmes.

The former agitator made these remarks during the second edition of the All Women Inter-States Debate, held in Abuja on Friday, July 24, 2026. The event, themed “Family Inclusion in National Development, Financial Economy and Community Security,” was organized by the African Mothers Initiative to promote the intellectual capacity of Nigerian women and encourage greater political participation.

General Emma Satu also commended the founder of the African Mothers Initiative, Mrs. Margaret Mkpanam, and her team for organizing what he described as a timely and impactful programme. He noted that the issues discussed during the debate were of great importance to individuals, families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
