The Katsina State government has taken a firm step to improve its education system by introducing a competency test for secondary school principals.
Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, announced during a workshop focused on “Effective Leadership and Management of Secondary Schools in Katsina State” that 1,350 principals would undergo a computer-based test (CBT) to assess their competency in leadership and curriculum management.
The test will be administered across five centers: Katsina, Daura, Funtua, Malumfashi, and Dutsin-ma.
The initiative is aimed at eliminating issues of nepotism, favoritism, and corruption in the education system, while enhancing the leadership structure of schools. Principals who fail the test will be reassigned to classroom teaching roles. In addition to the CBT, an essay test will be administered to evaluate communication skills.
The government is collaborating with JAMB, the Federal College of Education (FCE), Katsina, and other education stakeholders like the World Bank’s AGILE project and the Transforming Education System at State Level (TESS) to ensure the smooth conduct of the test. This move underscores the government’s commitment to reshaping the education sector in the state.
