The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, on Wednesday paid a courtesy visit to Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, the Senator representing Kano Central and a prominent figure in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in a meeting that has intensified political conversations across Kano State.
The high-profile visit, which took place in Kano, focused on issues of unity, peace, stability, and the overall development of the state. Although officially described as a courtesy call, political observers believe the meeting carries significant implications as the country gradually prepares for future political alignments.
According to a statement released by Professor Yilwatda and shared on his 𝕏 account, the discussions were cordial and centered on strengthening democratic values while encouraging cooperation among political leaders, regardless of party affiliation.
He stressed that elected officials and political stakeholders have a collective responsibility to prioritize the welfare of citizens above partisan interests.
“Today, I paid a courtesy visit to Senator Rufai Hanga, one of the leading stalwarts of the NDC in Kano State. Our discussions were cordial and focused on the unity, peace, stability, and future of Kano State. Regardless of political affiliation, leaders share a common responsibility to promote peace, strengthen democratic values, and work together in the best interest of our people.
“Nigeria’s progress is best served when we build bridges of understanding, encourage constructive dialogue, and place the welfare of citizens above partisan considerations. Together, we can continue to foster a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Kano State and Nigeria,” Yilwatda stated.
The visit comes at a time when the APC is reportedly intensifying efforts to persuade Senator Hanga to defect to the ruling party. Party leaders have argued that the senator has been politically sidelined within the NDC, alleging that he was denied greater political opportunities despite his contributions to the party.
According to APC officials, the refusal by the leadership of the NDC to offer Senator Hanga a more prominent elective position reflects what they describe as diminishing recognition of his political relevance. They have therefore appealed to the Kano Central lawmaker to join the APC, assuring him of greater recognition and opportunities within the party.
The development has further fueled speculation about possible political realignments ahead of future elections. While Senator Hanga has yet to publicly respond to the APC’s overtures, analysts believe that the meeting between the APC national chairman and the influential Kano senator could shape the state’s political landscape in the months ahead.
Political observers note that Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic states, making every major political engagement closely watched by stakeholders across the country. Whether the visit signals the beginning of a new political alliance or simply reflects a commitment to bipartisan dialogue remains to be seen.
For now, both leaders have projected a message of unity, peaceful coexistence, and collaboration, emphasizing that the interests of the people should remain the primary focus of political leadership.
