Bandits Abduct Kano Village Head in Midnight Raid, Residents Fear for His Safety.

By Bala Salihu Dawakin Kudu
KANO, September 19, 2026.

Residents of Aujarawar Alkali community in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State have been thrown into fear and uncertainty following the abduction of their traditional ruler, Alhaji Ahmad Yakubu Ahmad, popularly known as Ruwata, by suspected armed bandits.
The incident occurred during a late-night attack on Thursday, September 17, 2026, when the gunmen reportedly stormed the community and whisked away the village head to an unknown destination. Multiple Nigerian news outlets have independently reported the abduction.

According to reports, the attackers were heavily armed and invaded the community under the cover of darkness before taking away the traditional ruler. The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the exact number of attackers and their escape route, had not been officially disclosed as of Friday.

The development has heightened anxiety among residents, particularly the monarch’s family, community leaders and other residents who are now concerned about his safety and possible whereabouts.

The abduction was confirmed in a statement issued by Mahi Isma’il, spokesperson to the Zannan Kano and the District Head of Jogana.
Isma’il described the incident as a tragic development and a serious setback to the peace and security of the community.

Reacting to the development, the District Head of Jogana, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ma’aji, appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to locate and rescue the abducted traditional ruler.
“We appeal to security operatives to strengthen the protection of lives and property and do everything possible to ensure the safe return of our village head,” Ma’aji said.
He also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding while cooperating with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist efforts to rescue the monarch.

Ma’aji called on members of the public to pray for the safe release of Ahmad, expressing hope that he would soon return to his family and the people of Aujarawar Alkali.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over the vulnerability of some rural communities in Kano State to criminal attacks and kidnapping.
It comes against the backdrop of other recent security incidents in the state. Earlier in September, gunmen reportedly abducted the All Progressives Congress chairman in Rogo Local Government Area during an overnight attack, while Kano authorities have also continued security operations against kidnapping, armed robbery and other crimes.

The Federal Government also said earlier this month that it was adopting renewed strategies and stronger collaboration with state governments to tackle insecurity, following a bandit attack in Chiroma Village, Garun Mallam Local Government Area, on August 29.

The abduction of a traditional ruler is particularly significant because village and district heads often serve as important links between rural communities and government and security institutions. Their presence can facilitate communication, community mobilisation and the reporting of suspicious activities.
For residents of Aujarawar Alkali, however, the immediate concern remains the safe return of their leader.

As of the time of reporting, reports indicated that the Kano State Police Command had yet to issue a detailed public statement on the incident.

Community members are therefore appealing for a coordinated security response and increased protection of vulnerable rural settlements, while urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid actions that could jeopardise ongoing efforts to secure the monarch’s release.

The incident has once again placed the issue of rural security and the protection of traditional institutions at the centre of public concern in Kano, with residents anxiously awaiting news of Ahmad Yakubu Ahmad’s whereabouts and safe return.
