In a significant milestone for Bayero University Kano (BUK), the Senate has ratified the appointments of three new Deputy Vice Chancellors, one of whom is the institution’s first female DVC. The appointments were officially confirmed during the 421st Senate meeting held on Wednesday.
The newly appointed Deputy Vice Chancellors are Professor Haruna Musa (Academic), Professor Aliyu Mu’azu (Management Services), and Professor Amina Mustapha (Research and Development).
The appointments mark an important shift in the leadership dynamics of BUK, with Professor Mustapha’s appointment especially notable as she becomes the first female to hold the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor at the university.
Professor Haruna Musa – DVC, Academic
Professor Haruna Musa, who has been appointed as the DVC for Academics, brings with him a wealth of experience in academic leadership. Having attended Government Secondary School Danbatta in 1985, Professor Musa went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Bayero University in 1991. He pursued further education in Polymer Chemistry, earning his Master’s in 1999 and a PhD in the same field from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, in 2009.
Joining Bayero University as a Graduate Assistant in 1993, Professor Musa quickly rose through the ranks to become a professor in 2019. He has previously served as the Head of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry and was the immediate past Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at BUK.
A current member of the BUK Governing Council and Deputy Director of the Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainability Transitions, Professor Musa is poised to bring his extensive experience in academia to bear on his new role.
Professor Aliyu Mu’azu – DVC, Management Services
Professor Aliyu Mu’azu has been appointed as the DVC for Management Services. A 1993 graduate of the Department of Nigerian Languages at Bayero University, Professor Mu’azu continued his education by earning a Master’s degree in 1997 and a PhD in 2008, both from BUK. He also completed a Certificate Course on Higher Education and Administration in China.
Having joined the university as an Assistant Lecturer in 2002, Professor Mu’azu became a full professor in 2017. His previous role as Director of SERVICOM has given him significant experience in management, which will enhance his new position as DVC. Additionally, he is a member of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and has served as a visiting lecturer to universities in Italy and Poland.
Professor Amina Mustapha – DVC, Research and Development
Professor Amina Mustapha has been appointed as the DVC for Research and Development, making history as the first female to assume such a position at BUK. Joining Bayero University in 2002, Professor Mustapha rose through the academic ranks to become a Professor of Agricultural Economics in 2018. She is the first female professor from Yauri Emirate in Kebbi State. Prior to her appointment as DVC, Professor Mustapha served as the Deputy Director of Outreach and Publications at the Centre for Dryland Agriculture since 2015.
